General Tips and suggestions
Members don't want to be overloaded with visits so please contact
them as soon as you begin planning your visit. Check with your forestry
host the following:
- Availability of trips:
- Length of visit - e.g. 1 day, week, month
- Number of visitors: Some prefer small groups, others may be prepared
to take round a bus load of students!!
- Transportation: What sort of vehicle will get round. A bus can get
stuck in places. Are you going to organise it.
- Points of interest: What do you want to see? What are your hosts
wanting to show?
- Description of location (near a particular feature e.g.
National Forest Park)
- Brief description of forestry type (Virgin Conifer/Boreal forest)
- Best time of year- weather limits, seasonal commitments (planting
,etc.), bugs, irate natives
- Appropriate clothing and field gear ,etc.
- Have fun!!
It is up to each visitor to see what the host would be willing to
provide. Be tolerant as most hosts will be doing it purely out of goodwill and
it may be that you never get the chance to return the favour (a small gift is
always welcome). Organised tours are usually
an entirely different situation.
Therefore as a general guideline "Visitors will normally be expected
to provide their own transport, accommodation and provisions."

Travelling
Abroad
When travelling abroad you should check the following (the list is not
comprehensive but is there to act as a reminder):
- Passport should be valid until you return.
- Check to see if you need a visa for all countries which you
will be travelling through. The visas need to cover the whole of you visit to
the country and it is often safer to make allowances. See
www.embassy.org
www.embassyweb for some more
information.
- Check what inoculations or other health precautions you need
to make. Check with your doctor before travelling.
- Insurance
- Check with your host, travel agents etc. for any other restrictions
or recommendations. Weather or political situations can change quickly
- Money - where can you change it, are credit cards or
travellers cheques accepted. Check out currency
converters
- Finding accomodation: UK Hotels and Guest Houses many offering
exclusive discounts - Accommodation throughout England, Scotland, Wales and
Ireland at Web Site
