I'm looking for an impartial comparison of available ruggedized field data recorders using Windows CE or Windows Mobile, such as the Dap Microflex CE5000
www.daptech.com/products/CE5000/ and the TDS Ranger
I'd appreciate being pointed to any recent reviews/comparisons.
Thanks in advance,
Phil

Hi Phil,
I haven't seen any comparisons of any hardened field computers but I have used the TDS Ranger/RECON with a mobile GIS/GPS application. The unit is certainly lightweight and works well. The display is not bad in full sunlight but color aerial photos can be hard to read in those conditions.
We did have a rather disturbing issue one day when a unit was knocked off a park bench. The unit momentarily powered off and when it came back up, all the data were gone and I had to reinstall some programs. In other words, it had the same effect as a hard reset back to factory settings. Not good for a supposedly hardened unit.
One unit we have used recently with very good results is the Juniper Allegro. It is certainly larger and heavier than the Ranger or Recon but I like having all the alpha-numeric buttons for data collection rather than the pop-up screen keyboard of most WinCE applications. We use it with the Trimble ProXT with a 2m range pole that carries the entire unit. Very portable and versatile for GPS data collection where there is WAAS coverage.
My suggestion is to find a place to rent a unit rather than buy it (We get ours from a survey supply outfit in Houston). That is what we do since we only use it on a job-by-job basis (several times a year) and nowhere near daily. I always get the latest unit with up-to-date software and firmware and I don't have to maintain it. Plus the rental cost only adds about $10 an hour to our fee.
