Forest Information Update FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE VOL 3, NO. 04
    28 JANUARY 2002

Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services (http://home.att.net/~gklund/) and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm. Currently FIU is sent to about 5,000 email addresses world-wide including distribution through the Forest Net (run out of Finland), Global Association of Online Foresters (UK), International Forestry List (Malaysia), the Forestry Forum (Africa), the Society of American Foresters Members list and Forest Inventory (USA) as well as the lists I maintain. Many recipients forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe, unsubscribe, change your email address, or sponsor, contact me at gklund@att.net. Thanks Gyde

    FIU SPONSOR –

SPONSORS NEEDED!!!!!!!! – to help keep FIU coming and free. If you are interested in supporting an issue or issues of FIU and wish to gain some publicity at the same time, please contact me. Thanks, Gyde – gklund@att.net .

Terry McIntosh –A private contractor working mostly in Garry oak ecosystems on the west coast, although I have an extensive background in grassland ecology (on two projects I am studying ingrowth of trees as related to lack of a historical fire regime; I'm using a variety of methods to eliminate most of the trees in an attempt to reestablish the grasslands...apologies to the foresters on the list). Most of my work is provincially government funded, although I am also preparing rare plant status reports for our federal government. I have a PhD in steppe and grassland botany (bryophytes) and am loosely affiliated with the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.
    Zoran Stanojevic - Canada

HAVE YOU HEARD? NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

ROYAL FORESTRY SOCIETY UPDATES - From John Jackson - Going Places - Details of Royal Forestry Society travel bursaries for 2002 are at www.rfs.org.uk. Closes 5th February.. EXPERT MEETING ON HARMONIZING FOREST-RELATED DEFINITIONS FOR USE BY VARIOUS STAKEHOLDERS – I had the honor of participating in this meeting at FAO HQ last week. Over 70 people participated in the deliberations The focus was on forest related terms that have been or will be defined by the various international conventions and fora with the intent of harmonizing those that can be harmonized and providing some guidance for those that are yet to be defined. The goal is to streamline the reporting process, reduce burdens on nations and reduce confusion that may arise over similar terms and definitions at the international level. Forest, afforestation, reforestation, afforestation, degradation, revegetation and devegetation were among the key terms we discussed and compared. There is an increasing need for the inventory and monitoring of all lands and waters and the sharing of the resulting information with the international community. Harmonizing needs and definitions at the international level will make the sharing easier. I will post a short note when the proceedings of the meeting are made available. Gyde

    BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED...
This section is devoted to resource inventory tips and miscellaneous blurbs for whatever uses you care to make. Please limit contributions to one paragraph or so. Thanks, Gyde.

VOLUME COMPUTATON SPREADSHEET - Joachim Maier has developed a spreadsheet for Excel and Palm which computes volume per tree, acre, or stand in cord, board feet, and cu ft with int1/4 rule. He uses the gevorkian formula to calculate the volume. It can compute volume up to 10 samples. Input is DBH, height, BA, acreage, and stumpage. It then also give you the number of samples you need to be within a user defined accuracy with a probability of 66, 90, 95, 99, and 99.9 %. “I don't know at the moment how to make it accessible on my website, but would send a file to anybody who wants it. Quickoffice, for the palm, and/or excel for a PC is necessary to run the program. Quickoffice is a great spreadsheet for the palm and costs I think $30.” You may contact Joachim at jakemaier@adelphia.net.

QVADIS BOOKSHELF – From Harry Wiant - Here is a great site for free e-books for your Palm OS .. http://www.qvadis.com/exlibris/library.html

CHAMPION TREE INFORMATION SOUGHT – Terry Mock invites you to visit the Champion Tree project at http:// www.championtrees.org/indexf.htm. “The non-profit Champion Tree Project has been primarily involved with urban forestry but, as we expand internationally, we are getting more involved in rural sustainable forestry issues as well. “ Terry is specifically looking for a source of information on Champion Trees in Ireland and Italy but I am sure he would welcome input from any country. You may contact Terry at champtree@bigplanet.com. in Do you have any suggestions?

MARKING SAMPLE TREES. Neris Biciunas writes, “I am planning on installing several permanent growth plots in the PNW (mostly Douglas-fir, western hemlock, Sitka spruce, western red cedar, and red alder). My question has to do with attaching the numbered tags to the trees, and specifically, if anyone has had experience with stapling plastic "cable ties" to the stem. Has this method worked well, what are the hang-ups, or any other comments?” Please contact Neris at nbiciunas@menashafpc.com

OPPORTUNITIES - Several readers of FIU are seeking employment in the forestry field. If you have jobs available and are in need of good people, please consider posting your vacancies in FIU (there is no charge for this service) and the following outlets:

MS-LEVEL GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP AVAILABLE, QUANTITATIVE SILVICULTURE - School of Forest Resources, University of Arkansas-Monticello (http://www.afrc.uamont.edu/sfr/ index.htm ). A qualified candidate is sought to pursue an M.S. in Forest Resources degree with thesis research focused on the growth and development of a miniature loblolly pine plantation. The study has been established, first year measurements are completed, and now a graduate student is needed to oversee the project beginning in mid-August 2002. Nearly 8,000 seedlings have been planted at spacings from 4 in. by 4 in. up to 20 in. by 20 in. (hence the name miniature plantation). A fertilization treatment will be applied to half of the experiment in 2002. If awarded, graduate assistantships carry tuition waivers and stipends of $12,000 per year for a period of 1.75 years, assuming the maintenance of a grade point average of 3.0 (A=4.0). All assistantships are designated half- time, implying 20 hours of research work per week is expected. Acceptance into the graduate program requires an undergraduate GPA of 2.70 overall or 3.0 on the final 60 semester hours of undergraduate work. Acceptance into the graduate program does not guarantee an assistantship. For more information regarding this assistantship, please contact: Dr. Paul F.
