CORRECTION - It has been pointed out to me that my posting last week on changing the year in Windows for Y2K Compliance is not necessary. Microsoft considers Windows to be *adequately* Y2Kcompliant. Windows stores years as 4 digits. The only thing that the suggested action accomplishes is to change the format of how the date is displayed, but does not affect how the date is stored. My apologies to all. Gyde

WHAT'S FOREST HEALTH? In the last 20 years, FOREST HEALTH has been an issue of concern for many scientists, resource managers, administrators, NGOs, and the public throughout the world. Some forests have been subject to profound and often undesirable changes in ecosystem composition, structure and function. Numerous studies have been carried out to understand how ecosystems function, and how anthropogenic influences affect the integrity of these ecosystems. Still, the concept of FOREST HEALTH remains vague. Many definitions have been proposed, and the debate is far from finished. IUFRO Working Unit 6.03.02 is organizing a discussion group on the subject. If you would like to join, please send an e-mail message to listproc@NRCan.gc.ca with the following command in the message body: subscribe termforhealth-list Firstname Lastname Leave the subject line of your message blank. You should receive a message acknowledging your subscription almost immediately. You can find out more about the discussion group and IUFRO WU 6.03.02 at http://www.wsl.ch/forest/risks/wsidb/datenbank/fterms/discussion.html . Note: If you have any published definition of forest health, etc. and do not wish to join the discussion list, please pass them on to me and I will share accordingly. Thanks, Gyde
BIODIVERSITY INVENTORY METHOD SOUGHT - "We are a Sino-Dutch funded forest conservation and community development project (FCCDP). Our main objective is the improvement of integrated management of nature reserves with (sub)tropical forests. We work in 6 nature reserves of Yunnan, P.R. China, but the successful innovative measures could also serve as a tool for other nature reserves and forests areas in Yunnan. We want to develop is the "Inventory, Monitoring and Analysis (IMA) of biodiversity, forest resources and land uses in and around the Nature Reserves". In trying to cover all aspects, we developed 5 sub-systems: 1) the baseline inventory of main higher taxons. 2) the monitoring of threatened biodiversity (including habitats), 3) monitoring of important species to be protected by the nature reserve, 4) the monitoring of forest production functions, 5) the land use monitoring. The IMA will also make use of available aerial photographs and satellite images, and all the information will be incorporated in GIS. We would very much appreciate if you could find the time to advise upon (part of) the IMA system, specifically related to the following: 1). The most practical but still (to some extend) scientifically acceptable methodology to be used; 2). The minimal amount of sample sizes / amount and sizes of sampling plots and transects 3). Advise on the (needed?) combination of subsystems; like system 2 and 3, since 3 provides the control area for 2. Or 4 and 5, since 4 is forest land use, and 5 is all kinds of land use. Our own idea is that we should use stratified random sampling as much as possible. The segments in which the plots will be stratified should then be the 'units' to be studies. So for example for the Forest Production Monitoring in Subsystem 4, this should mean that we should make segments for each forest use type per coniferous, broad-leaved and mixed forests, and within these segments place the plots as random as possible. This means we can make a separation between a coniferous timber forests and a broad-leaved timber forests, and a separation between a broad-leaved timber forests and a broad-leaved fuel wood forests, for example. We are looking forward to your advise and information!" GROWTH AND YIELD MODELLING POSITION AVAILABLE - The Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA, Bordeaux, France) announces the availability of a new permanent position as Forest Researcher effective mid-2000: "Multi-scales modelling of the wood quantity and quality of plantation forests". The main objectives are to predict the wood production of pine forests, in quantity and quality, at different time scales (year to rotation) and at various spatial scales (tree, forest stand, forest estate). The researcher will deal with intensively managed forests and will model their growth and yield according to silviculture, ecological and genetic factors. The study area is the Landes forest (1 Mha), southwestern France, which is characterized by fast changes in management, diversification of wood products and large socioeconomic influence of the forest in the region. Main skills : knowledge on tree growth and wood properties in models and to change the scale of modelling (tree to forest). Personal abilities: autonomy and multidisciplinary work, field and office activity, good competence in verbal and written communication, FRENCH and English languages required, Spanish or Portuguese wished. Background: PhD. in forestry or plant ecology with a strong knowledge in modeling. More info will be available in French in January 2000 at http://www.inra.fr/Internet/Directions/DRH/infodrh/rubriques/offres.htm Address all inquiries to: Jean-Michel Carnus, Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique - Bordeaux, Station de Recherches Forestieres de Pierroton.
