This week's contributions come from Ray Allison, Bob Bailey, David J. Flaspohler, John Jackson, Keith Jones, Matt Kauffman, Aristotelis Papageorgiou, Mike Rauscher, Vivek Varma and Phil Weber. Thanks for taking the time to share!!
IS YOUR PC Y2K COMPLIANT? My friend, Ray Allison, passes along this check you can make if you have Windows.
Go to "My Computer"
Click on "Control Panel"
Double click on "Regional Settings" icon.
Click on "Date" tab at top of page.
Where it says "Short Date Sample" look and see if it shows a "two digit" year. Of course it does. That's the default setting for Windows 95, 98 and NT.
This date, RIGHT HERE, is the date that feeds application software and WILL NOT
rollover in the year 2000. It will roll over to 00.
Click on the button across from "Short Date Style" and select the option that shows mm/dd/yyyy. Be sure your selection has four Y's showing, not two.
Click on "Apply" then click on "OK" at the bottom.
Easy enough to fix. How many people know about it? How many people know to change that? What will be the effect? Who knows?

FAO MODEL CODE OF FOREST HARVESTING PRACTICE. The Forest Products Division of the FAO Forestry Department in Rome has published the study results as Forest Harvesting Case-Study 11. If you would like to obtain a copy of the 40-page document (plenty of photos included) please contact Joachim Lorbach (Joachim.Lorbach@fao.org). If you have questions specific to the study please get in touch with Elias (ros@bogor.wasantara.net.id).
FOREST PLANNING MODELS SOUGHT - Dr. Vivek Varma writes "Multiple use of forest resources in land allocation has usually been handled through assigning different chunks of land to different forest values (no overlap). It is well known that a unit of land provides several forest values at the same time. This however will depend upon the compatibility of the forest values considered. I searched for land use models that considered all the values available from a land unit, but did not get much. Obviously either I am doing something wrong, or I am looking for something that nobody has done before. Please help me by providing any clues, references etc. Thanks in advance." Please send your suggestions directly to Vivek at v.varma@landfood.unimelb.edu.au.
BUSINESS PLANNED INVENTORIES - R. Keith Jones writes: "In September I was asked by the Chief Forester for British Columbia to participate in and chair a recently formed "Forest Resources Inventory Council" for BC. Our focus is strategic as opposed to diving-in on technical details. Our vision is: Cost effective, consistent and statistically reliable measurements of the quality, quantity, location and rate of change of the full range of BC forest resources required to meet strategic resource management objectives and ensure the sustainability of the forests. One of our key challenges is to provide practical recommendations on strategic inventory priorities and the investment of limited dollars. To accomplish this, we plan to design and build some form of Strategic Decision Framework for the Resources Inventory to support a number of existing, but always well-coordinated business planning processes. Ideally, this framework should be multi-scaled (serve a broad range of management decision scales and intensities), multi-themed and amenable to a structured, multi-stakeholder, business planning process from the whole province down to at least sub-regional planning units. My question - are you aware of any similar initiatives that may have already grappled with the design, development and implementation of this kind of strategic decision framework? Any leads on this would be most appreciated." If you can help, please contact Keith directly at: R. Keith Jones & Associates, 2554 Bowker Avenue, Victoria, BC, V8R 2G1 Canada. FUNDING SOUGHT FOR MSC STUDIES- Fidelis writes "I have a bit of a dilemma at the moment because I am intending to pursue my MSc studies. Unfortunately our University of Zimbabwe does not have a forestry faculty so I have to look elsewhere. I am also looking for the requisite funding for the studies. My study will be inventory related and will dwell basically on biomass studies. I have already collected some data which I took with me to Professor Michael Koehl (University of Dresden) for analysis. I will be great if you could circulate this to some of your colleagues in your circulation list." If you can help Fidelis with his studies, please contact him directly at: Forestry Commission, Chesa Research Station, Box 467, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Tel: +263 19 45662/42843. Email:chesa@acacia.samara.co.zw. [Note: For those seeing funds for a variety of reasons, you may wish to check out USDA Forest Service.
