FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE - 19 NOVEMBER 1999

GENERAL

This week's contributions come from Bill Feidt, Thomas Geary, and Sue Hill. Thanks for sharing!

SUPPORT FIU SPONSORS - This issue of FIU is brought to you in part through the generous support of EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT INTERNATIONAL, INC. - An international service firm specializing in: Crisis, emergency, disaster preparedness planning; Systems development for command and control Decision Support; Response and recovery operations for management; and Incident Command System training and simulation. For more information visit EMIs site at http://www.emi-usa.com/company.htm or contact Troy Kurth at emi@emi-usa.com."

URBAN SPRAWL - American forests has a nice spread on urban sprawl at http://www.amfor.org/garden/trees_cities_sprawl/urban_analysis/AF_WashingtonDC.pdf. An analysis of tree cover changes in the Washington DC area may be viewed at http://www.amfor.org/garden/trees_cities_sprawl/urban_analysis/AF_WashingtonDC.pdf. The Landsat images of Washington show that back in 1974, at least 41 % of the District had tree cover of 20% or more. In 1997, this only about 29% of the District had such tree cover. A couple of questions to my friends working on the Kyoto Land Use report - 1) Most of the District back in 1974 was covered with trees. Is that considered "forest" land? 2 ) Does the current reduction in tree cover count as an emission? 3) Is this change considered "deforestation" or something else if the answer to question 1 is no? No response is necessary. Just asking questions. By the way, I am still assembling national definitions of forest, forest land and tree. You may view what I have gathered thus far at http://home.att.net/~gklund/DEFpaper.html. If you note any missing national level definitions, please pass them on to me. Thanks, Gyde

FORESTRY COMPENDIUM: A UNIQUE TO THE CHARACTERISTICS OF TREE SPECIES. Module one is now available. Includes over 600 species representing 40% of those important worldwide plantation forestry. Comprises datasheets prepared/verified by experts, species selection tool, pictures, maps, bibliographies, glossary, user notepad, TREENAMES and Tree Seed Suppliers databases plus much more. HELP!

MOUNTAIN FOREST INFORMATION SYSTEMS -Dr. Sangeeta Pandey is looking for information on "information and communication systems in forestry", with a special focus on forestry for sustainable mountain development, for example: 1. what exists - electronic (on-line and off-line) as well as non-electronic (traditional, print, networks etc), 2. what works and what doesn't - any case studies of successful (or failed) efforts, 3. the gaps - especially obvious at the community levels and what, if anything, is being done, 4. any promising initiatives or prospective plans. If you have any information to share, please contact Sangeeta directrly at E-mail: sangeeta@icimod.org.np. URL: http://www.icimod.org.sg

PRIVATE GAME MANAGEMENT - Ismail SAFAK writes "I have been working as a research assistant at the Department of Forestry Economics, Faculty of Forestry, University of Istanbul. My dissertation is about " The Feasibility of Private Game Management in Turkey." Turkey has 72 million hectares of potential area for game hunting purposes. It has been found that this number is considerably large when compared to other countries potential game hunting areas. Having a great number of potential game areas, Turkey has got only two private game animal enterprises. Previous researches have showed that the concern on private game management is less than it has to be in Turkey. Thus, related information about the concept that I have is not satisfactory either These are: 1- What optimum and minimum sizes must an area have for the production of partridge and pheasant species as game animals? How can it be calculated? 2- How can I open the area for the access of people who are interested in game hunting from abroad and is there any organisation which work on this issue? If there is/are ... How can I get in touch with these organisations? What are their standards and conditions for the membership? 3- Is there any research about the techniques of producing game animal and calculation of cost of production and hunting cost? If there is/are ... How can I reach this/these resources?" If you can help with any of these questions, please respond directly to Ismail SAFAK, University of Istanbul, Faculty of Forestry, Forestry Economics Dept. Bahcekoy - Istanbul, 80895 TURKEY. E-mail : ismailsafak@usa.net

EXPOSE YOURSELF … to the world!! - I am still looking for additional companies or organizations that would like to support FIU by placing small ad -- such as "This issue of FIU is sponsored by XYZ company, specializing in ABC. Learn more about XYZ at their website URL or contact NAME." If you are interested in sponsoring such a one-liner - please contact me. Thanks, Gyde (gklund@att.net).

RIL is an e-mail list server to distribute information, synopses of research results and activities on reduced impact logging (RIL). As an electronic mailing list the network will disseminate relevant information and serve as a node for discussing "hot" topics. The Electronic list is complemented by a "traditional" mailing list to serve those not yet linked to the Internet. The topics that to be covered include amongst others: biophysical issues (including on-site and off-site as well as biodiversity impacts); -economic issues (including financial and economic aspects); -the role of incentives in encouraging improved harvesting; -occupational health and ergonomics issues; -relevant technologies; and -the link of the Code to the application of C&I and certification. NEXT FIU - will be 3 December. Next Thursday (25 November) is our Thanksgiving Holiday. We will be attending a family reunion in St. Louis so there will be no FIU next week Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday - a time for giving thanks for what we have and for sharing moments with our family, friends and neighbors. . If there were any holiday I would like to see go global it is Thanksgiving. As we dine on a traditional meal of roast turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie I will be thinking of all my FIU friends at home and abroad on this special day.

As always, please share as appropriate. See you 3 December. Happy Thanksgiving. Gyde
