NEW ANALYSIS OF PER CAPITA EMISSIONS (from the Climate List) - The Australia Institute has completed a new analysis of per capita emissions for the 35 Annex B countries. The calculations are based on the official communications submitted by the various nations to the UNFCCC. They apply to emissions of the three main greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide) in 1995 from all sources and all sinks measured in carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2-e). The results show that Australia has the worlds highest greenhouse gas emissions per person at 26.7 tonnes; this is twice the average level for all other wealthy countries (13.4 tonnes) and 25% higher than emissions per person in the USA (21.2 tonnes). The next highest emitters after Australia are Luxembourg, USA, Canada and New Zealand. The Institute will be pleased to email copies of the report (9 pages) to interested people. Simply send a request to mail@tai.org.au.
WHAT WILL THE FUTURE BRING? - The November 8, 1999 issue of Time Magazine (Vol. 154 No. 19) is devoted to visions of the 21st century - at least that is what the USA version of Time is devoted to. Environmentally-related, thought-provoking articles include: What will the catch of the day be? Will we still eat meat? What's for dinner? Can we make garbage disappear? How hot will it get? What would a green future look like? and Will there be any wilderness left? On a more personal side - Will we keep getting fatter? Will we ever cure baldness? Can I live to be 125? and Can I grow a new brain? For more information see http://www.pathfinder.com/time/reports/v21/home.html.
