What satellite based information do fire control people need at the local, national and international levels for Fire Prevention, Early Warning of Fires, Detection, Monitoring, Suppression and Damage Assessment? Dr. Ashbindu Singh (UNEP-GRID) would like your assistance putting together a user needs requirements package. What could space agencies do to assist fire control community in terms of design of new sensors, satellites, provision of data, and information management? If you have any ideas, publications, studies, etc. please contact Ash directly at United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Global Resource Information Database (GRID), Eros Data Center, Sioux Falls, SD 57198 USA. FAO is planning on rewriting its Forest Inventory Manual and is looking for volunteers to assist with the job. FAO wants to produce the new manual with a large collaboration of specialists/professionals and forest inventory users. Therefore any idea or suggestion that might help in producing a good, updated, practical working tool for planning, carrying out, analysing and using forest inventories information are welcome. The new "Manual" should provide to the users an up-dated comprehensive list and an application-oriented description of the main tools and technical procedures that can be used for assessing the state of forest resources, in a broad sense, and on the changes taking place in their stock and flow. From our friend Gary Waggoner - Guide to Datums and Projections. The USGS/BRD Geospatial Technology Program has posted the new publication, Datums and Projections: A Brief Guide, by Tom Owens of the USGS Center for Biological Informatics. Scientists and resource managers often use or create data that are referenced to locations on the earth (geospatial data). Users of geospatial data need to know the coordinate system or projection the data are in so that they can make accurate measurements from the data or overlay different datasets for analysis. Frequently, users or creators of geospatial data are unaware or unsure of the projection or datum geospatial data are in, or which projection to select when creating geospatial data. This document provides geospatial data users with a practical, non-technical introduction to projections and datums--and their use and misuse.

The Society of American Foresters has put together a Foresters Career Center. Here among other things, you can look at costs of living of various locations, compare salaries, etc.
As always, please share as appropriate.
If you have any publications, meetings or links that may be of interest to the Forestry community, I would be happy to help you pass along the information. Thanks, Gyde
