FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE VOL 2, NO. 23
4 JUNE 2001
Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email
newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring
of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services (http://home.att.net/~gklund/)
and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in
the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm.
Currently FIU is sent to about 5,000 email addresses world-wide including
distribution through the Forest Net (run out of Finland), Global Association
of Online Foresters (UK), International Forestry List (Malaysia), the Forestry
Forum (Africa), the Society of American Foresters Members list and Forest
Inventory (USA) as well as the lists I maintain. Many recipients forward
FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe, unsubscribe, change your
email address, or sponsor, contact me at gklund@att.net. Thanks Gyde
FIU SPONSORS - This issue of FIU is sponsored in part through
the generous support of:
-
MEDIAMAPPER - from Red Hen Systems, Inc. The multimedia desktop
mapping solution. Take pictures and generate GIS map layers. The images
are linked to the map. Click a location to view what's there. Export interactive

TOP AWARD FOR ENVIRONMENTALIST – From Scott Miller - “Dr. Calestous
Juma, former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention on Biological
Diversity, has received the prestigious Henry Shaw Medal for his dedication
to protecting the environment while promoting sustainable development.
The award honours Juma as "one of the world's leading authorities on protecting
the environment while promoting ethical sustainable development in developing
countries". He called on the international community to work towards blending
environmental goals with development strategies. Juma is Director of the
Science, Technology and Innovation Program at the Center for International
Development at Harvard University (http://www.cid.harvard.edu/cidtech/)
and Senior Research Fellow of the Belfer Center for Science and International
Affairs at Harvard University. He is a previous recipient of the Pew Scholars
Award in Conservation and the Environment (1991), the Justinian Rweyemamu
Prize (1992) and the United Nations Global 500 Award (1993). The Henry
Shaw Medal— Missouri Botanical Garden’s highest award—honors those who
have made a significant contribution to botanical research, horticulture,
conservation or the museum community. The medal is named in honor of the
Garden's founder, the 19th century St. Louis philanthropist. It was first
presented in 1893 and previous medalists include William Ruckelshaus, Jose

respond - they are assuming the same. Your kind assistance will be appreciated
and rewarded. Thanks, Gyde
-
OLD GROWTH PONDEROSA PINE STRUCTURE - John Gold writes, ”I
need to assess the spatial distribution of old growth Ponderosa pine in
uneven aged mostly unmanaged forests at the stand level (40 to 200 acres).
Does anyone know of any standard indices of "clumpiness" in this application?
I need a sampling system which could easily be overlaid on a timber cruise
for volume calculation.” If you can help, please contact John at gold@fidalgo.net
-
BIOMASS INFORMATION SOUGHT - From the GAOF list - Richard
McKinnon writes, "I am undertaking an assignment on Biomass Energy, are
there any members who have had any experience in the following: 1. Methods
of calculating the volume of wood left over from clear felling once the
fallers have gathered the head logs / branch wood to the landings (we call
this a "birds nest"). 2. Chip the left over biomass in the forest, or,
transport the biomass to a central point for chipping? 3. There are a lot
of mobile chippers in the market, can you recall any brand names of good
machines you have used? 4.sAny pit falls in the collection of biomass you
have identified. Any assistance you may be able to provide would be appreciated."
Contact Richard at RAS-MCKN@xtra.co.nz.
