FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE VOL 2, NO. 20
14 MAY 2001
Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email
newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring
of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services (http://home.att.net/~gklund/)
and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in
the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm.
Currently FIU is sent to about 5,000 email addresses world-wide including
distribution through the Forest Net (run out of Finland), Global Association
of Online Foresters (UK), International Forestry List (Malaysia), the Forestry
Forum (Africa), the Society of American Foresters Members list and the
Forest Inventory (USA) as well as the lists I maintain. Many recipients
forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe, unsubscribe, change
your email address, or sponsor, contact me at gklund@att.net. Thanks Gyde

RGS-IBG WORLD REGISTER OF FIELD CENTRES - From Rebecca Trumble via
Mountain Forum - "I am writing to tell you about our new project to provide
an on-line database of field research centres around the world, and to
ask whether you would like to join the register. The register gives details
of established field centres that provide facilities for environmental
research, monitoring, training and education activities. The centres range
from small independent field camps to large long-term international facilities.
The main criterion for inclusion in the register is that centres welcome
international visitors who have an interest in their work, whether scientists,
students, teachers, school pupils or others. We have just made the register
available on-line. Users can identify suitable centres by searching according
to country, continent, environment and keywords. Our approach is to hold
a small set of details on each centre, so that users can first search the
database then contact suitable centres directly, via a live web link or
by traditional means. We have started the website with a small number of
field centers and we are now trying to encourage as many more as possible
to join before launching wider publicity later this year. To join the register,
you can easily send details by filling in the on-line form at http://www.rgs.org/fieldcentres
It is free to join, and we will contact you from time to time to keep your
entry up to date. If you do not have web access, please contact fieldcentres@rgs.org
for a plain-text email form. If you know of other centres, feel free to
forward this message."
NATIONAL WOODLAND OWNER SURVEY WEBSITE - From Andy Gillespie
- The USDA Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program's
National Woodland Owner Survey has established a web site at www.fs.fed.us/woodlandowners.
The site is still quite rudimentary and we will be continually improving
it for quite a while, but it should provide a general location for people
to access basic information on the Survey. If you have any suggestions
or comments on it, please send them to Brett Butler (bbutler01@fs.fed.us
).
BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED...
This section is devoted to resource inventory tips and miscellaneous
blurbs for whatever uses you care to make. Please limit contributions to
one paragraph or so. Thanks, Gyde.
USING THE PALM IN THE FIELD FOR DATA INPUT - From Harry Wiant,
Jr. - Some may wish to use their Palm computer for data input in the field.
This is feasible for some inventory programs, especially those that use
ASCII (text) files. The shareware program, QED (search for QED.zip), has
a large data storage capacity on a Palm. Data entry, especially if entering
only numeric values, is fairly rapid using the numeric keyboard on your
Palm. The process for my inventory programs is explained on my web site
(http://homestead.juno.com/hwiant/index.html).
When you do a Hotsync, the files will be on your "real computer" and can
be opened using Wordpad, Word, or some other program. You may find some
"garbage" in a portion of the first line which you will delete until the
first data entry values appear.
HELP!
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE - Note: If you can help with any of the
requests below, please take the time to do so. Do not assume others
will respond - they are assuming the same. Your kind assistance will be
appreciated and rewarded. Thanks, Gyde

WHAT SPECIES HAVE BECOME EXTINCT SINCE 1972? -
Help! I am trying to compile a list of species that have become extinct
since 1972 Globally and for Canada and the USA. I have found may
references of predicted rates of extinction and some partial local lists,
but I would like to develop a list of all those that have actually become
extinct - along with the year and probable cause. If you can help, please
contact me. I will share the list in a future FIU. Thanks, Gyde (gklund@att.net)
OPPORTUNITIES - Several readers of FIU are seeking employment
in the forestry field. If you have jobs available and are in need of good

PH.D. RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP IN STATISTICS/BIOMETRICS - Watershed
Resources Program, School of Renewable Natural Resources, The University
of Arizona. The assistantship will begin in July 2001. The work involves
20 hours per week employment while enrolled full-time as a Ph.D. student.
The assistantship salary is about $15,000 per year on a 12-month basis.
The purpose of this work is to conduct quantitative synthesis of existing
rangeland and watershed experiments so that the results can be combined
and extended to a variety of semi-arid land management situations and decision
support systems. This study will analyze published experimental results
from the southwestern U.S. This type of study is also referred to as meta
analysis. Research Objectives: 1. Collect published studies for rangeland
and watershed experiments in the southwestern United States. 2. Categorize
and summarize these studies in terms of the measured resource outputs,
experimental management practices, hydrology, soil and other site-related
variables, and factors related to experimental design. 3. Develop and estimate
a series of meta-analysis regression models to synthesize and extend the
results of these several experiments across diverse land management situations.
Desired Qualifications: Interested students will ideally have completed,
or be near completion, of a masters degree in natural resources with emphasis
in statistics, biometrics or some closely related field. They will have
experience with regression analysis and statistical software packages for
personal computers. The student will enroll as a full-time Ph.D. student
beginning fall semester 2001 in the Watershed Resources Program with a
study emphasis in statistics or biometrics. For additional information
