FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE VOL 2, NO. 18
30 APRIL 2001

Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services (http://home.att.net/~gklund/) and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm. Currently FIU is sent to about 5,000 email addresses world-wide including distribution through the Forest Net (run out of Finland), Global Association of Online Foresters (UK), International Forestry List (Malaysia), the Forestry Forum (Africa), the Society of American Foresters Members list and the Forest Inventory (USA) as well as the lists I maintain. Many recipients forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe, unsubscribe, change your email address, or sponsor, contact me at gklund@att.net. Thanks Gyde

HAVE YOU HEARD? NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

FROM OLD TO NEW WORLDS: SYMFOR - From Duncan Macqueen - The SYMFOR software tree growth and economic analyses tool for forest management was presented to a large number of potential users in the neotropics as part of a recent meeting of the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations (IUFRO) in Belem, Brazil. There is now considerable interest in developing management applications in Brazil and Guyana and linking to educational programmes throughout the region. Contact: paulvg@ed.ac.uk, URL: www.symfor.org , http://www.egroups.com/group/symfor

ETFRN NEWS - European Tropical Forest Research Network (ETFRN) news, a newsletter from the Tropenbos Foundation is available on line at http://www.etfrn.org/etfrn/resource/news.html

INCREASING ACCESS TO TROPICAL FRUIT INFORMATION - From Duncan Macqueen - The Fruits for the Future project at the University of Southampton is promoting information on five important fruit tree genera which include the Tamarind (Tamarindus indica), the Ber or Jujube (Zizyphus spp.), the African Plum or African Pear (Dacryodes edulis), the Baobab (Adansonia digitata) and the Custard Apple, Soursop and Cherimoya (Annona spp.). To the annotated bibliographies (currently available on the project website) will soon be added more detailed monographs / books and practical fact sheets. The first fact sheet on Tamarind is now available. Website counters
will track changes in interest by countries. Contact: n.n.haq@soton.ac.uk URL: http://www.soton.ac.uk/~icuc

THE TREE PLANTING AND FOREST PROTECTION SOCIETY (TPFP) - TPFP Society is a new independent, non profit-making, non governmental Organization dedicated to the memory of late Professor Larry Roche, (a dedicated forester who served Africa), to encourage rural dwellers in Tropical Africa to plant trees. TPFP Society seeks for development news and networking in the field of tropical forestry, reforestation, afforestation and forest protection. The TPFP Society sources for seeds of various types, produce seedlings and assist members/clients to establish plantations of fruit-trees and commercial trees anywhere in Africa. These services are mainly free as they are essentially donor supported. For large commercial plantation projects, TPFP Society seeks funding from both local and international financial institutions for the client if necessary. In addition, TPFP Society provides on request, anywhere in Africa, adequate outreach education and capacity building for rural communities and impact into them basic forestry skills necessary for them to uphold their "Forest Rights" thereby protecting their forests and environment. The Newsletter of TPFP called "The Tree Planters" is sent to all members quarterly. TPFP Society also welcomes information or articles for publication in the TREE PLANTERS. Membership of TPFP Society is free but donations no matter how little in terms of study materials to promote forestry and tree planting in Africa such as seeds, tools etc would be appreciated. For membership information, please contact: The Founder/CEO, TPFP Society ( Dr S. K. Sanwo), 19 Degun Street, P.O.Box 370, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria. Tel.: 234-2-8105562, Email: sanwo@skannet.com

EFI EVENTS - Brita Pajari reports that the European Forestry Institute has updated its event pages http://www.efi.fi/events/. Now we have there: 1) detailed information on events in the organisation of which EFI is involved, 2) a calendar of forest seminars and conferences thoughout the world, aswell as 3) links to other event sites.

7 May- 1 June 2001. E-conference - Biodiversity of Water and Forest - Science in support of the Ecosystem Approach. The topic of the E-conference is to discuss how natural dynamics and disturbances of forests and various forestry management affect biodiversity in freshwater and how natural dynamics and regulation of freshwater affect forest biodiversity. The results will be presented at a meeting 10-12 June 2001 of the European Platform for Biodiversity Research Strategy, see http://www.internat.environ.se/biodiversity The E-conference will comprise two main sessions in which experts will be invited to open the discussion on defined topics: A. Biology of interactions: The aim is to to identify major ecosystem processes and functions of importance to biodiversity that are or could be affected by human activities. The discussion should identify biodiversity features of the forest-water landscape (incl. wet habitats) and/or ”Forest ecosystem effects on water biodiversity” (functions affected e. g. by deforestation, draining and forestry measures, atmospheric pollution and climate change etc) & “Water ecosystem effects on forest biodiversity” (caused by regulation etc). B. Management and restoration: The aim is to to assess the present human impacts of the forest-water landscape with respect to major biodiversity features (e.g. forestry, water divertion and regulation, atmospheric pollution and climate change etc ) and discuss the cost-effectiveness of mitigation and restoration measures (buffer zones and area protection, silvicultural modifications, adapted water use and hydrological regulation, liming etc). Participation - To be invited to the E-conference please contact tor-bjorn.larsson@environ.se Please indicate in which of above sessions you have a major interest, and topics you may want to highlight.
