USDA/NASS CROPLAND DATA LAYER - From George Hanuschak - USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is releasing a new GIS data layer for selected States. The data layer is a categorization of Landsat 5 & 7 data into specific crop types for cropland areas. This is a new product from NASS and is available on CD's, currently at no charge. If you are interested, you can view the Cropland Data Layer at: http://www.nass.usda.gov/research/Cropland/SARS1a.htm

NTFP/TOF SESSION - From Michelle Gauthier - There is to be a session on 'Definition, measurement and inventory of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) and trees off forest (TOF) at the forthcoming IUFRO meeting: forest biometry, modelling and information science to be held in Greenwich from the 25-29th June. You can find the call for papers and registration details on the Greenwich web site at: http://cms1.gre.ac.uk/conferences/iufro/
NEW FIA DATABASE AND ANALYSIS TOOL AVAILABLE - From FIA News - For the first time, tree level data for all of the lower 48 States are available in one database. The Forest Inventory and Analysis Database (FIADB) replaces two FIA regional databases, one for the Eastern States (Eastwide database) and the other for the Western States (Westwide database). The new national plot design was the impetus for replacing these two databases. Legacy periodic inventory data from the Eastwide and Westwide databases has been converted and loaded into the FIADB. Future annual inventory data will also be loaded into the FIADB as they become available. To facilitate the use of the FIADB a new web application has been developed. The Forest Inventory Mapmaker, available at www.ncrs.fs.fed.us/4801/fiadb/index.htm, allows the user to create: 1) tables of forest statistics, 2) shaded county or congressional district maps, and 3) files suitable for loading into GIS software. The Forest Inventory Mapmaker program is a server-side web application, so the only software required to access this program is an Internet browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape. The Mapmaker can also be accessed through the FIA web site at fia.fs.fed.us in the 'Online Database' section. For questions bout the tool, or feedback on this version, please contact Pat Miles (pmiles@fs.fed.us) at the North Central FIA unit, telephone +1-651- 649-5146.
NEW ZEALAND - From James Barton - The Government of New Zealand sponsored an informal international workshop on the topic of Harvested Wood Products (HWP) to support activities related to the Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol. Twelve papers and a series of workshop sessions formed the basis of discussions held in Rotorua, New Zealand from 12-16 February 2001. Papers from this are at: http://www.forestresearch.co.nz/largetext.cfm?&page_id=1609&CFID=6532397&CFTOKEN=83330847
INFONATURA - From Russ Brown's Interamerican Resources Management
Newsletter 1 April, 01 - InfoNatura is an on-line resources for conservation
information on all the birds and mammals of Latin America and the Caribbean
- more than 5,500 common, rare, and endangered species in 44 countries
and territories. This interactive site permits you to search our database
for information on individual species, taxonomic groups, countries and
conservation status, including the global conservation status ranks assigned
by the Natural Heritage Network, the Red List category assigned to each
species by the IUCN's (World Conservation Union) Species Survival Commission
as well as the protection status granted each species under the Convention
on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). InfoNatura provides
taxonomic data (including scientific and common names in English, Spanish
and Portuguese), conservation status, references and national distribution
information for each species included in the database. For example, you
can search for all species of threatened parakeets in Colombia, all threatened
bird species found in Brazil and Argentina, or simply information about
howler monkeys in South America. You can also find plenty of information
describing the sources of the data and the definitions of the different
conservation status ranks, as well as a Glossary and a help page. InfoNatura
is available at: http://www.infonatura.org/
