FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE VOL 2, NO. 13
26 MARCH 2001
Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email
newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring
of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services (http://home.att.net/~gklund/)
and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in
the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm.
Currently FIU is sent to about 5000 email addresses world-wide including
distribution through the Forest Net (run out of Finland), Global Association
of Online Foresters (UK), International Forestry List (Malaysia), the Forestry
Forum (Africa), the Society of American Foresters Members list and the
Forest Inventory (USA) as well as the lists I maintain. Many recipients
forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe, unsubscribe, change
your email address, or sponsor, contact me at gklund@att.net. Thanks Gyde

HAVE YOU HEARD? NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS - Scientific American 284(4):50-65
has a very interesting series of articles on "Genetically Modified Food
- Are they safe?" While not discussed in the articles, what we can or cannot
do in agriculture has a direct impact on forests and forestry. Improving
the yield of agricultural crops may take reduce the pressures to convert
lands to farms. Similarly, the technology that can increase yields from
foodstuffs, may increase yields from trees. At the same time, the environmental
concerns voiced against genetically modified foods are also being heard
concerning genetically modified trees. www.sciam.com
GEOMATICA FREEVIEW -From Archie Pedden via IFL list - PCI Geomatics
is distributing FREE copies of their "Geomatica FreeView" software for
the education, government and commercial sectors. This geomatics software
package will allow a user to: 1) View, pan, zoom and enhance any number
of imagery, at any depth, any size, or any resolution, 2) Access 80+ different
raster/vector formats directly in their native format without need for
import first, 3) Overlay GIS vector data ( SHP, TAB etc...) and view their
attribute tables 4) Integrate different data types with different projections
that use on-the-fly reprojection capabilities, 5) Support for common formats
such as SHP, e00, DXF, MID/MIF/TAB, DGN, ECW/ERS, IMG/GIS/LAN, BMP/GIF/JPG,
RGB/COT/CFL, HDR, TIFF/GEOTIFF, MrSID, Oracle 8i Spatial/GeoImage, HDF-EOS
(MODIS), ASTER, LANDSAT 5/7, SPOT, RADARSAT, IKONOS, ERS-1/2, AVHRR, NITF,
SDTS, DTED etc...etc...etc.. "Geomatica FreeView" can be directly downloaded
from PCI's website at http://www.pcigeomatics.com/freeware/download_form_freeview.htm.
FOREST HEALTH MONITORING EAST AFRICA - From Brad Smith - A team
of USDA Forest Service Forest Inventory and Health Monitoring personnel
conducted field training and plot measurement activities in East Africa
during February, 2001. For those interested, Paul Rogers (USDA Forest Service,
Rocky Mt. Res. Sta.) has placed his field notes, with photos (large file),
on the Las Vegas FTP site (ftp://fhm-server.lv-hrc.nevada.edu/fia/africa).
The notes describe activities conducted, adjustments made, and problems
which arose during the FHM pilot in the Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania
and Kenya. Contact Paul Rogers with questions or comments at 801-625-5330
or progers@fs.fed.us.
HELP!
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE - Note: If you can help with any of the
requests below, please take the time to do so. Do not assume others will
respond - they are assuming the same. Your kind assistance will be appreciated
and rewarded. Thanks, Gyde
-
FOREST MAPPING REFERENCES SOUGHT - From the SAF member list,
Peter Lineham writes, "I will be teaching an introductory course in forest
mapping next fall. Does anyone know of an up-to-date book that covers topics
such as topographic maps, use of the compass (orienteering), basic surveying
concepts, commonly used forestry maps, basic GPS and basic GIS? I know
this sounds like a tall order to have in just one book. But I'm hoping
there will be something out there akin to the Forest Surveying handbooks
put out by Oregon State many years ago. This course is for first year forest
technology students, so the more field oriented the better." If you have
any suggestions please contact Peter at p_linehan@yahoo.com.
OPPORTUNITIES - Several readers of FIU are seeking employment
in the forestry field. If you have jobs available and are in need of good
people, please consider posting your vacancies in FIU (there is no charge
for this service) and the following outlets:

PH.D. GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP AVAILABLE - Northern Arizona
University. Two 4-yr Ph.D. assistantships are available. The research for
both positions examines plant community structure and function since fire
exclusion on a set of long-term, permanent, historical plots in the Southwest
(estab. 1909). The first study will determine herbaceous and shrub structure,
biodiversity, and understory successional trends. The second study will
focus on the forest overstory development and dynamics on this unique set
of plots. Students with backgrounds in plant ecology or forestry (with
ecology emphasis), and quantitative methods are encouraged to apply. A
M.S. is required. Both assistantships start July 1, 2001. Both assistantships
are $14,500 per year. An out-of-state tuition waiver and student health
insurance are included with the Ph.D. stipend. Northern Arizona University
is a comprehensive public institution located on the southern Colorado
Plateau, adjacent to mountains, deserts, and the Grand Canyon. For information
on the research proposals please visit: www.eri.nau.edu/Phd_ad.htm. For
additional information on the assistantships, contact: Margaret.Moore@nau.edu.
Please attach your resume if you are interested in applying. For information
on the Ecological Restoration Institute, visit www.eri.nau.edu. For information
on the School of Forestry and application materials, visit the graduate
degree programs' section of www.for.nau.edu. Application deadline is 15
April 2001.
