FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE VOL 2, NO. 11
12 MARCH 2001
Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email
newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring
of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services (http://home.att.net/~gklund/)
and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in
the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm.
Currently FIU is sent to about 5000 email addresses world-wide including
distribution through the Forest Net (run out of Finland), Global Association
of Online Foresters (UK), International Forestry List (Malaysia), the Forestry
Forum (Africa), the Society of American Foresters Members list and the
Forest Inventory (USA) as well as the lists I maintain. Many recipients
forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe, unsubscribe, change
your email address, or sponsor, contact me at gklund@att.net. Thanks Gyde
FIU SPONSOR - This issue of FIU is sponsored in part through

HAVE YOU HEARD? NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
FIELD METHOD DOCUMENTATION AVAILABLE - From FIA News 1 March
2001 - The USDA Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis program has
recently updated their documentation of field methods. Version 1.5 of the
phase 2 field method guide covers basic sample location monumentation,
plot establishment procedures, condition class determination, and basic
tree mensuration and damage measurements. The Phase 3 sampling protocols
(conducted on 1/16 of the phase 2 plots) include measures of ozone biondicator
plants, lichen community sampling, soil sampling, tree crown classification,
down woody debris and fuel measures, and methods for a pilot test of vegetation
diversity and structure measurement. All documents are available on the
FIA web site at http://fia.fs.fed.us/library.htm#Manuals
in MS Word 2000 format.
HELP!
FEEDBACK
-
STATISTICAL PACKAGES - (see 5 Mar FIU) - From Chris Cieszewski
via GAOF list - Probably Statistica and possibly StatGraphics would be
an ideal choice for you. If you ever get to more complicated nonlinear
problems you might consider S+. If you're a FORTRAN programmer, and don't
shy from using poscript graphics, an ultimate choice for the later might
be the TSP. Also, TSP is the cheapest of them all and possibly the most
robust from numerical stability point of view.
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE - Note: If you can help with any of the
requests below, please take the time to do so. Do not assume others will
respond - they are assuming the same. Your kind assistance will be appreciated
and rewarded. Thanks, Gyde
-
WHAT DOES YOUR INVENTORY COST? - Bernie Parresol is seeking
for information on typical inventory cost per Hectare for a friend in China.
Bernie knows it depends on the terrain and the type of information one
is seeking but he would like some possible scenarios of cost. If you can
you provide any insight on this please contact Bernie at bparresol@fs.fed.us.
-
USFS SEEKING FIA CUSTOMER FEEDBACK - From FIA News 1 March
2001 - In their efforts to solicit feedback for continuous program improvement,
the USDA Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis Unit has posted a
Customer Service Questionnaire on their website http://www.srs.fs.fed.us/fia/wo_survey.htm.
The objective of this questionnaire is to solicit feedback on the 'status
and trends' in user satisfaction with the FIA program. The information
gathered will be used to identify priority areas for program improvement,
as well as to satisfy program and Forest Service requirements with respect
to the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) reporting requirements.
Eventually, FIA will incorporate the questionnaire directly into the various
FIA online database systems, so that users are automatically offered the
opportunity to complete the form. If you have not done so already, please
take a few minutes to complete the survey and help the USFS to establish
a baseline for measuring improvement in the FIA program.

RESEARCH COOPERATORS NEEDED - As the inventor of a new soil
cultivating attachment for Reforestation /Afforestation Tim Van Horlick
is seeking opportunities to establish research within Europe / Asia and
further work in a Tropical Climate. This machine, the "VH Mulcher" has
been sold widely over the last ten years with good research established
in Canada, USA, and Australia / New Zealand. Tim is hoping to find co-operators
to share the financial burden whom are having soils or plantation establishment
difficulties whom would benefit from increased seedling survival and growth.
All suggestions are welcome. Reference web site Http://www.vhmulcher.com.
You may contact Tim at tim@vhmulcher.com
OPPORTUNITIES - Several readers of FIU are seeking employment
in the forestry field. If you have jobs available and are in need of good
people, please consider posting your vacancies in FIU (there is no charge
for this service) and the following outlets:
