FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE VOL 2, NO. 08
19 FEBRUARY 2001
Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email
newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring
of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services (http://home.att.net/~gklund/)
and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in
the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm.
Currently FIU is sent to about 5000 email addresses world-wide including
distribution through the Forest Net (run out of Finland), Global Association
of Online Foresters (UK), International Forestry List (Malaysia), the Forestry
Forum (Africa), the Society of American Foresters Members list and the
Forest Inventory (USA) as well as the lists I maintain. Many recipients
forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe, unsubscribe, change
your email address, or sponsor, contact me at gklund@att.net. Thanks Gyde

BOREAL FORESTS - Jeff Monty writes, "I just want to draw your
readerships attention to Canada's -Yukon Territory's comprehensive web
site for forestry information called the "Boreal Forest Research Network".
Suggest readers go to www.bfrn.net and visit the site."
IRELAND BIODIVERSITY - The protection and enrichment of forest
biodiversity in Ireland’s forests received a major boost with the announcement
of a IR£1 million R&D project co-funded by COFORD (the Council
for Forest Research and Development - http://www.coford.ie)
and EPA (the Environmental Protection Agency). Following a public call
for research proposals on forest biodiversity in May 2000 a successful
research consortium comprising University College Cork, Trinity College
Dublin and Coillte (the Irish Forestry Board) following international peer
review. The partners have just signed a contract with COFORD and the EPA
for an in-depth five-year study. Interim results will be used to inform
and revise policy and practice where appropriate. The project will examine
the impact of afforestation and forest operations on the biodiversity of
flora and fauna on a range of site types. It will also quantify the changes
in biodiversity that occur throughout the forest cycle and most importantly,
it will outline best practice for the enrichment of biodiversity in the
forests of Ireland.
GOOD TREE NURSERY PRACTICES (COMMUNITY NURSERIES) - From Tony
Simons - With over 2000 copies already distributed of the DFID-funded,
English version of the book "Practical Guidelines for Community Nurseries"
ICRAF is pleased to announce the publication of the Spanish translation
"Guia Practica para Los Viveros Comunitarios". To get your copy write to

Salt Lake 2002 will give special consideration to educational programs
that address issues on Salt Lake 2002's environmental platform. Salt Lake
2002's environmental platform is broad and deep, addressing energy and
water conservation, environmental education, recycling, air quality and
waste management. Apply online by going to: http://www.saltlake2002.com/
and clicking on "environment" under "main sections" or call +1-801-212-2241
to request a hard copy of the application. Applications will be accepted

HELP!
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE - Note: If you can help with any of the
requests below, please take the time to do so. Do not assume others will
respond - they are assuming the same. Your kind assistance will be appreciated
and rewarded. Thanks, Gyde
-
TREE PHOTOS SOUGHT - From Tony Simons - Following the launch
in 1998 of the highly popular Agroforestree Database (a tree species reference
and selection guide), the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry
(ICRAF) with funding from the Department for International Development
(DFID) of the British government has been working to increase the species
coverage and information content. Version 1.0 of the AF Dbase is available
on CD-ROM or directly off the Internet (http://www.icraf.cgiar.org/treessd/databases.htm).
In version 2.0, which will be released in April/May 2001, the number of
tropical trees included has now increased from 321 to 502 tree species.
We still require photographic images for a number of taxa (http://www.icraf.cgiar.org/treessd/AFT/imageRequest.htm)
and would like to receive submissions in slide, photo or digital formats.
Photographic credits will be included for all images which are incorporated
in the database, and two free copies of the CD-ROM database Version 2.0
will be sent to all photographers whose images are included. Please send
your images to Ahmed Salim, ICRAF, Box 30677, Nairobi, Kenya (A.S.SALIM@cgiar.org)
-
TROPICAL TREE NURSERY DIRECTORY - From Tony Simons- Thousands
of large and small-scale tree nurseries exist in the tropics, but whatever
their number they appear to be too few for the millions of resource-poor
farmers of the developing world. To increase the knowledge and efficiency
of existing nursery work and better forecast future needs, ICRAF intends
to publish a Tree Nursery Directory along the lines of its Tree Seed Suppliers
Directory (http://www.icraf.cgiar.org/treessd/treessd.htm).
We would like to request information from donors, companies, organisations,
projects and individuals who are aware or are engaged in work on or promotion
of tree nurseries in the tropics. In particular, we would like to know:
(a) the countries, (b) number of nurseries, (c) average and range of annual
seedling production, (d) nursery type (research, community, individual),
(e) trees raised (species or types - e.g. fruit), and (f) other relevant
information. Please send your information to, or contact, Josina Kimotho,
ICRAF, PO Box 30677, Nairobi, Kenya (j.kimotho@cgiar.org).
-
PALM & GPS - Hugo Equihua asks, "Is anybody using the
Palm along with GPS Garmin software integrated for forest inventories yet?
If so please let me know the experiences." You may contact Hugo at hugoequihua@axtel.net.
