FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE VOL 2, NO. 07
12 FEBRUARY 2001
Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email
newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring
of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services
(http://home.att.net/~gklund/)
and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in
the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm.
Currently FIU is sent to about 5000 email addresses world-wide including
distribution through the Forest Net (run out of Finland), Global Association
of Online Foresters (UK), International Forestry List (Malaysia), the Forestry
Forum (Africa), the Society of American Foresters Members list and the
Forest Inventory (USA) as well as the lists I maintain. Many recipients
forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe, unsubscribe, change
your email address, or sponsor, contact me at gklund@att.net. Thanks Gyde

HELP!
FEEDBACK
UNGRAPHING (see FIU 5 Feb 01) - Thanks for
all the helpful responses! Gyde
Charles Harper - "For converting graphs
to tables you could take a look at http://www.biosoft.com.
I think they still produce some software called 'UnGraph'. I have been
using FigP for many years and noticed this ungraph in their marketing info."
For those that are interested, go to the Biosoft URL, click on Windows
Software and then on UnGraph. Price of the software is about $400 USD.
Neil Clark - "I don't know of any software that would
be flexible enough (or perhaps smart enough) to be able to analyze any
graph. But a nifty, free image analysis tool can be downloaded (or
run online I think) from http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij/.
Then you can just measure your distances or areas do your proportions,
scale the data, and . . . voila! Thanks for the good work with the FIUs,
they are really helpful to the forestry community."
Andrew Lister - "No info specifically on what you request,
but you could easily bring a scanned graph into ArcView and manually digitize
the dots/bar tops, and get an output of x,y coordinates of the digitized
points. If you digitize the origin of the graph, too, you've got
your data! Or, you can bring in a cleanly scanned graph and, possibly,
convert it into a form that will automate the digitizing of the points,
if manual digitizing's not possible."
Oscar Garcia - "I know of two similar freeware programs
to help with that. Essentially manual "screen digitizers", although
with some automatic tracing features too. From the readme's: TRACER
version 1.4 for Windows 95/98 (freeware), Author: Marcus Karolewski, Release:
September 2000, e-mail: mkarol@latin.com, http://www.ualberta.ca/~mkarol.
WinDIG Version 2.5, WinDIG is a data digitalization program. Load
a Windows bitmap, define a reference system on this bitmap, and get point
coordinates. Very useful if you have a scanner. The author : Mr Dominique
LOVY, Dept. of Physical Chemistry, University of GENEVA,30 Quai Ansermet,
CH-1211 GENEVE 4,SWITZERLAND. Email : lovy@scsun.unige.ch."
INFORMATION TECHNIQUES AND PARTICIPATORY MANAGEMENT
(See FIU 5 Feb. 01) - Megh Ranjani Rai writes, "I am not a technical
person per se, but just saw your message in the FIU newsletter. I thought
I would float this information to some of my colleagues, who are translating
our information collected through participatory surveys on to the GIS.
We also have started a Community Forestry mapping exercise that uses ortho
photos with the community to demarcate CF boundaries. If you would like
information, please feel free to contact Mr. Bhubhan Shrestha (Bhuban@menris1.icimod.org.np),
our coordinator for the Exercise and GIS expert."
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE - Note: If you can help with any of the requests
below, please take the time to do so. Do not assume others will respond
- they are assuming the same. Your kind assistance will be appreciated
and rewarded. Thanks, Gyde
-
INPUT SOUGHT - From Alex Korotkov - "The next meeting of
the Team of Specialists (ToS) on the Temperate and Boreal Forest Resources
Assessment (TBFRA) will be held at the beginning of June 2001 in Victoria
(Canada). The UN-ECE/FAO TEAM has been working on the assessment of the
wide range of variables/parameters of the temperate/boreal forests in 55
industrialised countries, and contributes to the international forest policy
dialogue. As you know, the latest TBFRA-2000 Report "Forest Resources of
Europe, CIS, North America, Australia, Japan and New Zealand" was published
in a hard format in the year 2000, and placed on the UN/ECE Timber Committee
Website http://www.unece.org/trade/timber/fra/pdf/contents.htm.
The TEAM plans to review the TBFRA-2000 follow-up work, to consider the
use and forest policy implications of the latest TBFRA findings, and to
discuss the preparation for the next round of Assessment. Any ideas and
information relevant to the above points on the ToS agenda, especially
on use and implication of the TBFRA data/information, as well as your suggestions
on how to make the next round (and the outcome) of the international temperate/boreal
forest resources assessments better, would be very helpful and much appreciated
by the TBFRA TEAM." Please send your notes on the matter to Alex Korotkov,
alexander.korotkov@unece.org
OPPORTUNITIES - Several readers of FIU are seeking employment
in the forestry field. If you have jobs available and are in need of good

FOREST INTERNSHIP SOUGHT - Marc Alexandre writes "I am in
my second year at the French National School of Agriculture and Agronomy
(ENSAT) and I have to gain research experience to achieve my degree of
"Ingénieur Agronome". I'm very interested in the forestry sector
(I studied last year the statut of conifer species in the French planting)
so I'm looking for a forester or a forest research team who would
host me for ten weeks this summer between the end of June and the end of
August. This internship would allow me to improve my knowledge of forestry.
I speak fluent French. If the country is English speaking, it would also
allow me to improve my English. Please contact me at alexandr@etu.ensat.fr
if you know of any opportunities."
-
ASSISTANTSHIP OR INTERNSHIP SOUGHT. Michael-Gerold Neuman
writes "Having completed my Masters Degree in Forestry Science at the Georg-August
University in Germany this past fall, I would like to supplement my studies
with an 1-year assistantship or internship in the USA in the field of Forest
Engineering, Work Science or Utilization; preferably one covering harvesting
and forwarding techniques. My areas of emphasis are Forest Engineering,
Utilization, Management, and Work Science. I will only be able to consider
positions providing a living wage. I would appreciate any information about
such opportunities. The beginning of the assistant- or internship could
be immediate or through fall. If you require more information about my
forestry education, skills or work experience, I will be happy to send
my resume." You may currently contact Michael-Gerold c/o Ingrid Stoltmann,
517 Oxford Circle #319, Davis, CA 95616 USA. Tel: +1-530-792-0955. Email:
oberforstmeister@gmx.de.
