FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE NO. 40
18 DECEMBER 2000
Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email
newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring
of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services
(http://home.att.net/~gklund/)
and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in
the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm.
Currently FIU is sent to about 4000 email addresses world-wide. Many of
these recipients forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe,
change your email address, or sponsor, contact me at gklund@worldnet.att.net.
Thanks Gyde

SPAIN - I just returned from attending a whirlwind forum on Encuentro
International sobre Explotaciones Forestales y Empresas Industriales in
Soria, Spain thanks to the generosity of Patronato Provincial Ppara el
Desarrollo Integral de Soria and the invitation of FORCE/Robak (www.fra.unb.ca)
and Gestion Unificada Integral Ambiental (www.guiafra.com), where I presented
a paper on "Information and inventories to support sustainable forest management"
focusing on Soria and Galicia. If anyone desires a copy of my paper,
send me an email asking for "spain." I think I drank more "vino
tinto" in the last three days than I have in the past year. My thanks to
my Spanish friends for their kind hospitatlity. Gyde

PRECOLONIAL FORESTS OF NEW BRUNSWICK - Martin Béland
is searching for references and information about the species composition,
structure and dynamics of precolonial forests of New Brunswick, Canada
with an emphasis on broadleaves. This type of information could come from
studies of palynology or early settler's archives, records of wood transactions,
studies of submerged logs left after floating operations, old aerial photos,
dendrochronological studies, etc. Martin seeks this information as
a first step in order to plan a research program for ecosystem management
and sylviculture of broadleaves in New Brunswick. You may contact Martin
at mbeland@cuslm.ca
-
LATIN AMERICA HIGH VALUE TIMBER RESEARCHERS SOUGHT - Verónica
Loewe is looking for some colleagues working with high value timber species
and/or mixed plantations, because she am starting a new project in this
topic, and interested in organizing an exchange among Chile, Brazil and
Argentina through ABC projects. Information about the project can

then to Proyectos, and then "Silvicultura de Especies no Tradicionales."
If someone is interested in, please contact Verónica at vloewe@infor.cl
-
TECHNICAL REPORTS FOR MACHINERY - Elizabeth-Anne Anderson
is wondering if anyone knows if there is a global forestry association
who conducts technical reports on forestry equipment. She has had
reports commissioned by the UK forestry commission on our tree planting
machine - but is looking for some kind of accreditation that is more global.
Please contact Liz at E.A.Anderson@aymorton.co.uk
-
SAMPLING PROCEDURE - Vittorio Tosi writes "I forward a question
of a collegue involved in inventories of plantations. He is going to prepare
a sampling procedure for tree rows. These rows are spread especially in
our farms in the Po valley. Do you know a definition for this particular
inventory object or have you particular suggestions as regard minimum width,
length, etc.?" If you can help, please contact Vittorio at tosi@isafa.it.
