FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE NO. 39
11 DECEMBER 2000
Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email
newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring
of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services
(http://home.att.net/~gklund/)
and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in
the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm.
Currently FIU is sent to about 4000 email addresses world-wide. Many of
these recipients forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe,
change your email address, or sponsor, contact me at gklund@worldnet.att.net.
Thanks Gyde
FIU SPONSOR - This issue of FIU is sponsored in part through
the generous support of:
-
HAGLOF Inc., manufacture of quality forestry measurement
instruments. Their Mantax Computer Caliper enables the user to quickly
and accurately measure and store data with one instrument. For more
information on the Mantax Computer Caliper, or other instruments like the
Vertex Hypsometer visit Haglof Inc. at www.haglof.net or contact
them via e-mail at haglofinc@aol.com.
INPUT: This week's input comes from U.N. Bhati, Andy Gillespie,
Jim LaBau, Jelle Maas, Frits Mohren, Mark Nastasi, Yosihiro Nobori, Vidar
Nordin, Pankaj Oudhia, Paul Romeijn, Janne Sarkeala, and Simo Varis
. Thank you all for sharing your information!
HAVE YOU HEARD? NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
ANU FORESTRY MARKET REPORTS - Since 1997, we at ANU Forestry
have been regularly publishing quarterly market reports. We make them available
free through industry newsletters and magazines and the internet. The target
audience of the reports is small-scale forest growers in Australia. However,
it has come to our notice that people other than small-scale growers in
Australia and overseas, who have discovered the market reports accidentally,
also find them useful. So, it occurs to us that maybe we should systematically
let other people know about the availability of the market reports. We
therefore invite you to look at the market reports and at the overview
of the project on our web site: http://www.anu.edu.au/Forestry/info/marketreport/index.html.
(The overview explains whys and hows of this work.)
REVISED FIA LIBRARY WEB SITE - The USDA Forest Service
Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) web site at fia.fs.fed.us has undergone
some significant revision, particularly in the library section. We
have reorganized the library to include sections for Program Fact Sheets,
a set of 1 to 2 page summaries of various aspects of the FIA program; FIA
Program Briefings, Summaries and Overviews, with some more detailed briefings
on the program; Scientific Papers, Publications, and Meeting Presentations,
where we will place published documents or presentations of national significance;
Maps, where we will eventually compile a list of nationally relevant spatial
coverages; Business and Organizational Documents including our Annual
Business Reports and Strategic Plan; and Field Guides, Methods, and
Procedures, a list of all of our current field methods guides.

FEEDBACK - Last week I asked for cost information about various
forms of remote sensing. Thanks to Hugo Raúl Zerda, David Wardrop,
Patricio González, Dirk Boon, and Mike Wulder. I assembled
the following satellite imagery web sites that may be of interest to other
FIU readers.
Prices vary according to type of imagery and services desired. Other contacts:

HELP!
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE - Note: If you can help with any of the
requests below, please take the time to do so. Do not assume others
will respond - they are assuming the same. Your kind assistance will be
appreciated and rewarded. Thanks, Gyde
-
SOFTWARE ARTICLES WANTED - From the Forest List - The New
Zealand Journal of Forestry will be running another software issue in February
2001. Review articles for forestry-related software are invited.
We are particularly interested in software that is relevant to financial
and physical planning for smaller forest owners, or consultants who deal
with this type of owner. Articles should be 500 to1100 words.
Expressions of interest in writing an article should be directed to the
Editor, Dr Hugh Bigsby at bigsbyh@lincoln.ac.nz.
-
GPS INFORMATION - From the GAOF list - Chris Erickson writes,
"What I need is a low end GPS handheld set which can store, say 10 locations
which can later either be downloaded or entered by hand into a spread sheet.
Nothing fancy as this unit is for light use. Contact Chris at chrerick@nmsu.edu.
-
WEB BASED FORESTRY EXTENSION - Matt Davis is interested in
creating a web-based forestry extension tool (he calls it the Wisconsin
Woodland Assistance site) and has looked for other states that have something
similar. To date, he has only found one site, that operated in the
state of Maine, that is a "one stop shopping" site for landowners.
Many other states have a lot of information, but he's been looking for
a stand alone interactive tool that can guide landowners through the volumes
of information. If you know any other examples, please contact Matt at
hartlandmd@hotmail.com.
-
BIODIVERSITY IN CAMPESINO AGRICULTURE - Cristina Chávez
Mejía writes, "I am doing research about the management of natural
resources by indigenous people in the highlands of central Mexico. One
aspect of the research is to identify the elements that determine low and
high biodiversity in campesino agriculture. Another research aspect is
the economic evaluation of wild flora which is used by people. In both
research areas there is little literature, could you please give
titles of articles or authors regarding the topic?" Please contact Cristina
at ccm@coatepec.uaemex.mx.
OPPORTUNITIES - Several readers of FIU are seeking employment
in the forestry field. If you have jobs available and are in need of good
people, please consider posting your vacancies in FIU (there is no charge
for this service) and the following outlets:
