FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE NO. 38
4 DECEMBER 2000
Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email
newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring
of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services
(http://home.att.net/~gklund/)
and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in
the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm.
Currently FIU is sent to about 4000 email addresses world-wide. Many of
these recipients forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe,
change your email address, or sponsor, contact me at gklund@worldnet.att.net.
Thanks Gyde

HAVE YOU HEARD? NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
GLOBAL FOREST INFORMATION SERVICE - The Global Forest Information
Service has reached new milestones recently: - first tests of the GFIS
prototype (unveiled in Kuala Lumpur, Aug 2000), - starting the GFIS-Africa
project (launched in Dakar, Oct 2000), and - U.S. Adaptive Management Area's
Information Portal ongoing (Pacific NW) - negotiating on the European GFIS
project - planning a couple of other GFIS-projects. The recent developments
have been reported in http://iufro.boku.ac.at/iufro/taskforce/hptfgfis.htm.
At this stage, it would be useful to have an idea what kind of information
(especially on-line databases) could be available for GFIS in the near
future - say before July 2001. That would help the GFIS Task Force to consider
a network of services which would suit optimally with the data to be provided.
Therefore, you are invited to pre-register as potential data provider.
We have provided a temporary registration form at the URL: http://www.metla.fi/iufro/gfis-data.htm.
The pre-registration is non-binding from your side and from the GFIS side,
its purpose is only to map the potential data providers for further contacts.

Arend Jan van Bodegom; 3. "National forest programmes; from political concept
to practical instrument in developing countries" by Herman Savenije; 4.

mechanism" by A.J. van Bodegom, H.J.F. Savenije and G. van Tol. The Theme
Studies Series are published jointly by the International Agricultural
Centre (IAC) and the National Reference Centre for Nature Management (EC
LNV) under the aegis of the Forests, Forestry and Biological Diversity

HELP!
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE - Note: If you can help with any of the
requests below, please take the time to do so. Do not assume others
will respond - they are assuming the same. Your kind assistance will be
appreciated and rewarded. Thanks, Gyde
-
INVENTORIES IN SE ASIA - Sarah Burgess writes, "The Department
of Forestry within Cambodia is preparing to undertake a national timber
needs assessment. Many forest resources are now under concession
management, and for local communities this has resulted in an increase
in prices and decrease in access to such resources. The study will
therefore, examine local requirements for wood, the costs involved, and
the supply areas, in order to guide the department in its plans for meeting
future needs. The work will be assisted by the GTZ Cambodian-German Forestry
Project, and before it proceeds, I am writing to seek your advice on appropriate
methodologies and techniques to undertake this type of research.
I would be very grateful if you could send me references of any similar
studies which you are aware of within the region, which might assist the
department and myself." Please contact Sarah at cgfp.sarah@bigpond.com.kh
-
COSTS OF IMAGERY - Help! I am trying to assemble a comparison
table of costs (per sq. km) of purchasing various types of imagery - Aerial
photography (various scales), satellite imagery (AVHRR, Landsat 7, SPOT,
IRS, ER-2, JERS, RADARSAT, etc). Please contact me if you have any
price information to share or if you can point me in the right direction.
Thanks, Gyde (gklund@att.net).
-
MARCH III GPS UNIT - Sara Kohan asks, "Is anyone familiar
with how to read lat/long coordinates from the MARCH III while collecting
polygon data? For example, I would like to get the coordinates of a beetle
infestation while gathering information to transfer to ArcView." If you
can help, please contact Sara at skohan@hotmail.com.
-
MODELING FLOATING COSTS - Brett Nodello writes, "I am currently
developing a mathematical model to produce a multi year operational plan.
Does anyone know of a way to model floating costs? The model provides
the level of harvesting (volume)within each block to be harvested in each
season of the 5 year period. The costs to float machines from each
block to every other block are available. Any input would be greatly
appreciated." Contact Brett at v7re@unb.ca
OPPORTUNITIES - Several readers of FIU are seeking employment
in the forestry field. If you have jobs available and are in need of good
