FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE NO. 37
27 NOVEMBER 2000
Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email
newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring
of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services
(http://home.att.net/~gklund/)
and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in
the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm.
Currently FIU is sent to about 4000 email addresses world-wide. Many of
these recipients forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe,
change your email address, or sponsor, contact me at gklund@worldnet.att.net.
Thanks Gyde
FIU SPONSOR - This issue of FIU is sponsored in part through
the generous support of:
-
HAGLOF Inc., manufacture of quality forestry measurement instruments.
Their Mantax Computer Caliper enables the user to quickly and accurately
measure and store data with one instrument. For more information
on the Mantax Computer Caliper, or other instruments like the Vertex Hypsometer
visit Haglof Inc. at www.haglof.net or contact them via e-mail at
haglofinc@aol.com.
INPUT – Sorry to be a little late with this edition of FIU.
My wife and I just returned home after spending about a week in Atlanta
for our Thanksgiving Holidays visiting our kids, my brother and my brother-in-law
and their families. Wonderful trip, but I am glad to be back! This
week's input comes from Richard Fox, Tom Hammett, Chris Goulding, Michelle
Gauthier, David Kaimowitz, Khorrami, Scott Miller, Vidar Nordin, Alexandra
Prenzel, Brad Smith, Peter van der Meer, and Douglas Wandersee. Thank you
all for sharing your information!
HAVE YOU HEARD? NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
POSITIVE OUTLOOK FOR NZ'S AGRICULTURE AND FORESTRY SECTORS -
http://www.asiabiotech.com/
New Zealand's Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has recently released
its bi-annual report on "Situation and Outlook for New Zealand Agriculture
and Forestry, September 2000." The report looks at how the agriculture
and forestry sectors have done in the past three years and their future.

JUSTA STOVE - Trees, Water & People (TWP) is a U.S. non-profit
organization that coordinates reforestation and watershed protection projects
in Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. Working in conjunction
with the Aprovecho Research Center, TWP has also developed the new "Justa"
fuel efficient stove that reduces fuelwood needs by more than half. Beyond
the substantial ecological benefit resulting from the greatly reduced fuelwood
need, it saves families either the cost of buying wood or the considerable
amount of time required to gather it. The Justa stove, named after
one of TWP's stove promoters in Honduras, Justafina Osorto, has been well
received throughout Central America for these reasons and also because
it eliminates the omnipresent smoke in the house that results from cooking
over traditional open fires. For more information visit TWP's site at http://www.treeswaterpeople.org
or contact them via email at twp@treeswaterpeople.org .
NEW MAP - The new US cover map is now available to public at
www.nationalatlas.gov
NEW FIU SUBCRIBERS - FIU is pleased to welcome:
-
Jen Patterson - jpatterson@sso.org
-
Cathy Plume - World Resources Institute, cathyp@wri.org.
-
Tim Parkes - Forester in NSW, Australia, State Government
Forest Management Agency (State Forests of NSW). Tim manages the development
of forest information systems, with a large component of this being spatial
systems. TimP@sf.nsw.gov.au

“TREES OUTSIDE FOREST” REFERENCES SOUGHT – FAO invites you
to suggest bibliographic references and other information which deserve
to be included in priority in the Annotated Bibliography on “Trees-Outside-Forest
(TOF): Concepts, Functions, Dynamic and Assessment”. The FAO Forest Conservation,
Research and Education Service (FORC), in the framework of its programme
on Trees-Outside-Forest, is preparing a Source Book including an annotated
bibliography, to be published in 2001. The source book will contain approximately
750 references covering various topics in all the regions of the world,
in rural as well as urban/peri-urban environment. The emphasis is on developing
countries. The main subjects to be covered are: Definitions, terminology,
concepts, classification, functions (goods and services) of TOF (environmental,
socio-economic, cultural, etc.), TOF resource management, qualitative and
quantitative assessment of TOF: assessment and inventory tools/methodologies;
assessment experiences, and ; results, statistics, dynamic of the resource,
education and research: training material, curriculum, workshops, networks,
and policy and planning. FAO appreciates your contribution at your earliest
convenience, no later than 15 December 2000. Contact: Michelle Gauthier,
Forestry Officer, Forest Conservation, Research and Extension Service (FORC),

MENSURATION EQUIPMENT DEVELOPERS AND MANUFACTURERS SOUGHT.
Khorrami is seeking the email addresses of companies involved in the development
and manufacture of forest inventory and biometry instruments. Please contact
Khorrami at jsismaz@jsis.neda.net.ir
-
EXCAVATION QUESTION – From the SAF-Member list. David Swenk
asks, “Can anyone remember the formula to calculate cubic foot of fill
generation while excavating? Its been too many years since my forest road
design class and I can’t find my engineering manual!” If you can
assist, please contact David at dswenk@co.santa-barbara.ca.us
-
ELAEOCARPUS GRANDIS INFO. WANTED. From the GAOF list - Emile
Jurgens writes, “ I am currently doing research on Elaeocarpus grandis
but am having difficulty finding some vital information. Have there been
any plantation trials for this species? What are the growth rates? What
kind of market is there for the timber etc.. If you know anything at all
about this species, I would greatly appreciate your advice.” You may contact
Emile at emile_jurgens@yahoo.com.
OPPORTUNITIES Several readers of FIU are seeking employment
in the forestry field. If you have jobs available and are in need of good

NON-TIMBER FOREST PRODUCTS FELLOWSHIP - The Rainforest Alliance
is currently accepting applications for the Kleinhans fellowship, a two-year
position. The Kleinhans Fellowship provides an opportunity to carry
out research into the development of new markets for non-timber forest
products or the expansion of existing markets. A successful application
will outline the need for research, its potential applications and the
likely impact on local communities and wildlife. At the end of the project,
a thoroughly documented paper suitable for publication is required.
Fellows are expected to summarize and disseminate the results in the local
language to communities in and around the study area. The Kleinhans Fellowship
research area is restricted to Latin America. Projects that can eventually
be replicated in other parts of the world are strongly encouraged. Applications
from any tropical forest type wet or dry are eligible. The successful applicant
will have a master's degree in forestry, ecology, environmental science
or an appropriate related field. Doctoral candidates or post-doctoral
researchers are preferred. Applicants may substitute relevant experience
for degrees. Applications and questions should be directed to Sabrena Rodriguez
(SRodriguez@ra.org ).
