FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE NO. 36
20 NOVEMBER 2000
Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email
newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring
of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services
(http://home.att.net/~gklund/)
and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in
the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm.
Currently FIU is sent to about 4000 email addresses world-wide. Many of
these recipients forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe,
change your email address, or sponsor, contact me at gklund@worldnet.att.net.
Thanks Gyde
FIU SPONSORS - This issue of FIU is sponsored in part through
the generous support of:
-
TREES, WATER & PEOPLE (TWP) - specializing in providing reforestation
and watershed protection assistance in Latin America and the United States.
Working in conjunction with the Aprovecho Research Center, TWP has also
developed the new "Justa" fuel efficient stove that reduces fuelwood needs
by more than half and is now available for world-wide use. For more
information visit TWP's site at http://WWW.treeswaterpeople.org

ONLINE MAP CREATION [Postscript, Adobe Illustrator] [From The
Scout Report for Science & Engineering, Copyright Internet Scout Project
1994-2000. http://scout.cs.wisc.edu
via the Interamerican Resources Management Newsletter]. "Online Map
Creation (OMC) is an amazing resource for geologists, geographers,
or anyone needing to make a map figure for a research paper or conference
talk. Here you can create Postscript-formatted maps of just about any locality
by inputting Geographical coordinates. OMC is a subset of GMT (Generic
Mapping Tools) software developed by scientists at University of Hawaii
and NOAA. Mercator, equidistant cylindrical, polar stereographic, lambert
azimuthal equal-area, azimuthal equidistant, and orthographic projections
can be made. Political boundaries, rivers, bathymetry, and topography can
be displayed on maps along with tectonic features such as faults and ridges.
Once you enter your desired parameters, a full-color (or b/w if you want)
map will be presented as a .gif image or for download in Postscript or
Adobe Illustrator format. Step-by-step instructions are provided."
To use Online Map Creation visit http://www.aquarius.geomar.de/omc/omc_intro.html
NEW JOURNAL - (Also from the Interamerican Resources Management
Newsletter) Elsevier Science announced a new journal for 2001, "Ecological
Indicators: Integrating Monitoring, Assessment and Management." It is intended
to be a unique new forum for the publication of your research and management
experiences in ecological and environmental indicators; development and
modeling of indices; analysis and research of resource-, system- and scale-specific
indicators; new indicators, and new approaches and methods for indicator
development, testing and use; methods for integration of social and other
valuation metrics; and broad assessment objectives and methods through
the use of indicators. Authors of papers published in the first volume
of Ecological Indicators will receive a FREE one-year subscription to the
journal. Visit the website for further information on the journal, and

NTFP INVENTORY PLOTS - Isabelle Gambetta is looking
for literature or experience about inventory and analysis of data (multivariate)
about NTFP on transects plots for 20x50 m, every 150m, in Ecuadorian Amazon,
on the foothills. She inventories quantitatively about 10 different products
(ferns, fruits, fibres) and note the presence or absence of a lot of others
products. She has found a lot of literature about one hectare inventory,
but is looking something about all vegetation of one community (multiple
plots), like secondary vegetation, pasture, virgin forests to be able to
compare with her results and methods. She will be grateful to receive any
advice or literature or results about this theme. It is a part of her PhD
that consist on the importance of non-timber forest products for some communities
in the Amazonian Ecuador (availability, market and consume) If you have
information to share, please contact Isabelle at gambetta@fowi.ethz.ch
-
MEASURING UPPER STEM DIAMETERS - Jon Lambert writes, "Does
anyone know of any technology developed for measuring upper-stem diameters
of trees? We have used relaskopes and Criterion lasers however the accuracy
of these measurements is low. I'd love to hear from anyone with knowledge
of something more accurate." Please contact Jon at jlambert@woollybutt.com.au
-
NEW TREE HEIGHT MEASUREMENT SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT SOUGHT - Note:
this is a second listing. The first in 30 Oct. FIU had an error in Mr.
Khorrami's email address. Mr.Ramzanali Khorrami, Research
Center of Natural Resources and Animal Affairs of Mazandaran
in Passand Research Station (North of Iran), has developed
a new method for measuring tree heights without measuring the distance
to the tree. He is seeking a scholarship to follow his education,
or financial support to develop the new apparatus for measuring heights
of trees. Mr. Khorrami, is a B.S graduate of forestry agriculture-engineering
from Gorgan University of Agriculture and Natural Resources in Iran and
is interested in mathematics, natural modeling and new application of achievements
in natural resources. For further information contact Khorrami- Ramzanal
at P.O. Box 86 Sari, MAZANDARAN, IRAN. E-mail jsismaz@jsis.neda.net.ir

TREE DISPERSION ANALYSIS - Note: This is a correction
of area involved in Sandra's study as previously posted in 13 NOV FIU.
Sandra Velarde Pajares writes, "I would like to know if there is any software
available to analyze TREE DISPERSION with different methods. The raw data
consists on positioning (x,y), diameters and species of an inventory over
50 cm db on 720 000m2 (72 ha) in a Tropical Forest." If you can assist,
please contact Sandra at gvelarde@terra.com.pe.
