Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email
newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring
of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services

alternative and better ways and structures that contribute to combat desertification.
This interactive e-mail discussion list is intended to facilitate debate
toward eradicating the problems of global poverty, natural disasters and
environmental refugees in the framework of the United Nations Convention
to Combat Desertification in that Countries Experiencing Serious
Drought/Desertification (UNCCD). It will also address issues related to
women and desertification and to sustainable agriculture, environmental
degradation, food and natural resources within the context of desertification.

SAWDUST AS FISH POISON - Pankay Oudhia writes, "Last week
I was in Ethnobiological survey of Siliguri District (North-eastern part
of India). It is Sub -Himalayan region. During my survey, I have seen an
interesting use of Schima walichii bark. The tribals of this region apply
the sawdust in ponds and within seconds all fishes appear on the surface.
It is used as fish poison. This trick has increased the cost of fish in
nearby areas and due to this trick availability of fishes is decreasing.
I have studied the literature but do not have any related references. If
you have any information about this, please contact me. I am also interested
in its possible mechanism." Pankaj Oudhia pankaj.oudhia@usa.net
-
SKI AREA IMPACT ANALYSIS - Sarah Walters writes "I am undertaking
a study in to "The implementation of Environmental Management Systems within
Ski Resorts in North America and France. I would appreciate contact
with interested parties and schemes currently in use." You may contact
Sarah at srwalters-c1137877@lmu.ac.uk.
-
TREE DISPERSION ANALYSIS - Sandra Velarde Pajares writes,
"I would like to know if there is any software available to analyze TREE
DISPERSION with different methods. The raw data consists on positioning
(x,y), diameters and species of an inventory over 50 cm db on 36 000 m2
(= 36 Has) in a Tropical Forest." If you can assist, please contact Sandra
at gvelarde@terra.com.pe.
-
REDUCED IMPACT LOGGING SOFTWARE - David Hughell writes,
"I am interested in your experiences with different software programs being
used to assist in reduced impact logging (RIL) planning and operations.
Specifically, I am interested in programs that can do the following activities:
process stock survey data (100% inventory and mapping of all commercial
trees in cutting block, process topographic survey data and conduct terrain
analyses, apply decision support algorithms for directional felling and
skid trail location." If you can assist, please contact David at dhughell@solutions2000.net
