Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring of natural resources.  FIU is produced by Forest Information Services (http://home.att.net/~gklund/) and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in the natural resources field. REMINDER - A MONUMENTAL EVENT! - the Society of American Foresters National Convention, Washington DC -16-20 November 2000.  I hope to see many of our FIU readers at the Convention! I will be presenting a paper on Sunday, 19 November (13:30) on Using the Internet to Communicate Your Ideas and at other times, I will be helping with the Pacific Meridian Resources (www.pacificmeridian.com) exhibit (#501). RAINFOREST AND MARINE ECOLOGY FIELD COURSES. Mike Nolan writes, "We are a non-profit organization specializing in outstanding and affordable Field Courses Rainforest and Marine Ecology presently offered in nine countries (http://www.rainforestandreef.org). All programs are operated by partner organizations that have shown a strong commitment to conservation and education over time at each site. Ninety-nine percent of all participation fees stay with our partners to assist in conservation and education projects. Local Guides and Biologists are featured in the study of natural history, rainforest and coral reef ecology, medicinal uses of native plants, conservation, land management, local cultures, archaeology, geology and much more… Three Undergraduate or Graduate credits are available for attending through Aquinas College (http://www.aquinas.edu) of Grand Rapids, Michigan." FIRST PUBLISHED ANNUAL FOREST INVENTORY RESULTS  - The State of Maine, in collaboration with the Northeastern FIA unit, has analyzed and published the first publicly available results based on annual FIA data.  The analysis, available at www.state.me.us/doc/mfs/mfshome.htm,

CLIMATE CHANGE BIBLIOGRAPHY -The latest version of the Pacific Institute's online bibliography on climate change (defined herein as global warming or ozone depletion) impacts on biodiversity is now available, with over 400 citations added since the last installment was posted in August. The bibliography can be found at: http://www.pacinst.org/wildlife.html. The bibliography includes citations culled from peer-reviewed and gray literature (including journal articles, newspaper articles, reports and materials on the Internet), is searchable, and downloadable as a PDF. The bibliography will continue to be updated every two months. Suggestions for additions or corrections to the bibliography are greatly appreciated. Contact:  wburns@pacinst.org

INVENTORY AND CRUISING NEWSLETTER BOOK -  John Bell has compile his first 50 issues of his Inventory and Cruising Newsletter into one book.  The compilation is available from John Bell and Associates, P.O. DESERTIFICATION DISCUSSION GROUP -  From the Forestry Forum - You are invited to join the DesertificationConcern e-maildiscussion  list. This interactive discussion forum is to facilitate dialogue, collaboration, networking and information dissemination and exchange of ideas and experiences on long-term practical and creative solutions aimed at developing and strengthening alternative and better ways and structures that contribute to combat desertification. This interactive e-mail discussion list is intended to facilitate debate toward eradicating the problems of global poverty, natural disasters and environmental refugees in the framework of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in that Countries Experiencing Serious  Drought/Desertification (UNCCD). It will also address issues related to women and desertification and to sustainable agriculture, environmental degradation, food and natural resources within the context of desertification.
