FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE NO. 34
6 NOVEMBER 2000
Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email
newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring
of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services
(http://home.att.net/~gklund/)
and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in
the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm.
Currently FIU is sent to about 4000 email addresses world-wide. Many of
these recipients forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe,
change your email address, or sponsor, contact me at gklund@worldnet.att.net.
Thanks Gyde

NATIONAL LAND COVER DATASET NOW AVAILABLE - From: Interamerican
Resources Management Newsletter 29 October 00 - The U.S. Geological Survey
(USGS) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have teamed up
to compile the first seamless National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) using
satellite imagery for the conterminous United States. At 30-meter resolution,
the NLCD is the most detailed land cover information ever compiled at a
national level. The new CD-ROMs include data for the states east of the
Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. Data for the remaining states will be available
within the next six months. The first eight CD's of a planned 31-volume
disc set contains 21 categories of land cover information across the lower
48 states. These data are used in a variety of national and regional applications,
including watershed management, environmental inventories, transportation
modeling and land management. For complete details visit - http://www.usgs.gov/public/press/public_affairs/press_releases/pr1299m.html
PARTIAL BIBLIOGRAPHY OF SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS PROTOCOLS FOR USING
TERRESTRIAL AND AQUATIC ARTHROPODS IN BIODIVERSITY STUDIES - This bibliographic
database includes over 1100 citations to papers on the use of insects and
other terrestrial and freshwater arthropods in biodiversity studies. This
is a working compilation derived from multiple sources. It is not intended
to be comprehensive in coverage of any taxon or geographic region or subject.
Most of the citations include keywords. http://entomology.si.edu:591/entomology/MethodsBib/search.html

GLOBAL ASSESSMENT OF BAMBOO RESOURCES - Over 1,000 known
bamboo species grow over wide areas of Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and
Latin America and contribute to the livelihoods of millions of people.
Despite its economic significance, statistics on bamboo resources, especially
in natural stands, are very poor. Classified as a “non-timber forest product”,
bamboo is not routinely included in resource inventory. A good and
transparent estimate of bamboo and rattan resources has yet to be developed.
As a first step to improve the information available, the International
Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) and the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring
Centre (UNEP-WCMC) are jointly initiating a project to estimate the magnitude
and distribution of bamboo resources within natural stands. In the
first instance, the project will combine information on the distribution
of individual taxa with floristic data and global data on forest cover
to generate a global distribution and estimated total area of forest containing
bamboo. For this reason, we are seeking advice and information about
bamboo occurrence and distribution. We would be grateful for any
information you might be able to provide concerning: the species of bamboo
present in your area; physical factors that determine their distribution;
the abundance of bamboo resources; the abundance of bamboo within particular
forest types; additional sources of information or contacts we should make.
Please contact us with comments and questions: Nadia Bystriakova and Valerie

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION ON PERMANENT SAMPLE PLOTS (PSP) - From
RILNET - Plinio Sist writes "Although there are many studies and
research results regarding the immediate impact of alternative logging
techniques on forest stands, long-term monitoring based on permanent sample
plots where ecological conditions and stand characteristics were recorded
before logging and then periodically afterwards are still very few. Of
course, I know about the PSP set up in Uganda which have been monitored
since 1939, those in Brasil by Silva, in French Guiana by Cirad-Forêt.
For Indonesia, the PSP of STREK are the only experimental plots set design
which remained undisturbed (I do not know about the DfID project in Palangkaraya)
whereas many others, like that set up by TROPENBOS in ITCI, burned during
the successive fire events in the 1990s. I am interested to have more information
on the PSP network in Southeast Asia related to the monitoring of forest
dynamics after logging." If you have any information, know where to find
relevant data on PSPs and/or have a document that you can send to Plinio,
please do not hesitate to contact him at: CIRAD-Forêt, TA/10C, Campus
Internat, 34398 Montpellier Cedex5, France. Phone: 33-4-67 59 37 66; Fax:

TREE INVENTORY SOFTWARE NEEDED - Cecilia Polansky writes,
"Have you heard anything about FIDAPS or other software developed for easily
getting tables of trees per hectare by diameter class? If no such
thing exists, what are the chances of working on developing such a thing?
It would have to be something that minimum-level forest agents in these
places could use, kind of like what the US has in their various cruise
programs sold through Forestry Suppliers (in British or US units; I'm looking
for metric). Also it would ideally allow for cluster sampling. We
just completed an inventory in a 10 000 hectare forest of miombo species
in Zambia. Data was processed through SAS, but it requires a lot
of programming knowledge and doesn't put tables out exactly as we'd like."
If you can help, please contact Cecilia Polansky, CLUSA-nrm, PO box 510-586,
Chipata, Zambia. Email: cecep@pop3.zamnet.zm

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION ON TRAINING COURSES - From
the Forest List - The DFID funded Cross River State Community Forestry
Project, Nigeria is seeking details of training courses that might be appropriate
for Middle / Senior Management of the Cross River State Forestry Commission.
The focus of the courses might include some or all of the following: the
concepts and application of community-based, participatory forest Management,
community-led forest inventory, the management of institutional change
within forest organizations, the development of communication and public-awareness
raising skills and, strategies. Typically we would expect such courses
to last from 3 - 6 weeks. The course language should be English.
A short summary of the location, timing, content and cost of the course,
together with a contact for further information would suffice at this stage.
