FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE NO. 33
30 OCTOBER 2000
Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email
newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring
of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services
(http://home.att.net/~gklund/
) and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in
the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm.
Currently FIU is sent to about 4000 email addresses world-wide. Many of
these recipients forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe,
change your email address, or sponsor, contact me at gklund@worldnet.att.net.
Thanks Gyde

OUTLOOK FOR WOOD PRODUCTION FROM FOREST PLANTATIONS - As part
of FAO's Global Forest Products Outlook Study, FAO has just produced an
outlook for wood supply from forest plantations to the year 2050. The study
is in three main sections. The first examines historical trends and the
current status of the global forest plantation resource, in terms of its
size, location, species and age composition, use and production potential.
The second section examines important economic and policy factors that
have driven forest plantation establishment in the past and are likely
to continue to do so in the future. The last section presents three scenarios
for future forest
plantation expansion and potential roundwood production from forest
plantations. This paper is the result of a concentrated effort to collect
reliable forest plantation statistics for all of the countries with significant
forest plantation resources (more than 20,000 ha of forest plantations),
to critically review the data and make corrections where necessary and
to put this all together into a form that is comparable with all of the
existing information about forest plantations held by FAO. The modelling
of potential roundwood production from forest plantations is also a significant
advance on previous efforts in this field. The study includes information
about over sixty countries that, combined, account for about 98% of the
global forest plantation resource. Electronic and printed copies of the
report can be obtained from: Adrian Whiteman, Forestry Officer (Sector
Studies), FAO, Room D423, Via Terme di Caracalla, 00100 Roma, ITALY. E-mail:

NEW TREE HEIGHT MEASUREMENT SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT SOUGHT - Mr.Ramzanali
Khorrami, Research Center of Natural Resources
and Animal Affairs of Mazandaran in Passand Research Station
(North of Iran), has developed a new method for measuring tree heights
without measuring the distance to the tree. He is seeking a scholarship
to follow his education, or financial support to develop the new apparatus
for measuring heights of trees. Mr. Khorrami, is a B.S graduate of
forestry agriculture-engineering from Gorgan University of Agriculture
and Natural Resources in Iran and is interested in mathematics, natural
modeling and new application of achievements in natural resources. For
further information contact Khorrami- Ramzanal at P.O. Box 786 Sari, MAZANDARAN,
IRAN. E-mail jsismaz@net.neda.ir
-
CLIMATE CHANGE AND DWARF MISTLETOE - Mark Johnston writes,
"I am part of a research team looking at potential climate change impacts
in the Western Canadian boreal forest. We are particularly interested in
the linkages between climate and forest insects and disease. Some pests
(e.g., spruce budworm) have been examined from a climate change perspective
and information is available in the literature. However, we have found
little in the way of research that has looked specifically at climate and
dwarf mistletoe. The mistletoe of interest here is Arceuthobium americanum,
which is an important pest of jack pine (Pinus banksiana). I would like
to hear from anyone out there that knows of relevant references that could
get us started on a lit review of this topic." You may contact Mark at
johnston@derm.gov.sk.ca.
-
GIS INFORMATION WANTED - Dean Carstens writes, "I am a South
African forestry student moving into the GIS field. I have currently
received an assignment on identifying GIS tools in forestry. As I
am still new in this area, I would appreciate any assistance. I can
only think of two basic tools, namely GIS and CAD. I don't know however
if I can identify vector and raster as tools though. Anyone's help would
really be appreciated." You may contact Dean at s9801611@student.petech.ac.za.
-
TRIANGULAR TESSELLATION INVENTORY - Rob Waterworth is currently
involved in looking at different sampling methods which could be applied
to an inventory conducted in highly variable mixed species forest types.
He wonders if anybody has any experience or comments on the use of Triangular
Tessellation (Ward, 1991, For.Ecol.Man. 44 285-290) as a method for estimating
stocking, species and volume estimation in these forest types. Are there
any other options to fixed area plots to pick up the variability in a native
mixed species forest? If you have any experiences to share, contact Rob
at Robert.Waterworth@ea.gov.au.
OPPORTUNITIES Several readers of FIU are seeking employment
in the forestry field. If you have jobs available and are in need of good
people, please consider posting your vacancies in FIU (there is no charge
for this service) and the following outlets: http://foresters.org/jobs/
