FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE NO. 32
23 OCTOBER 2000
Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email
newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring
of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services

CONVERSION RATES SOUGHT - Christine Conn writes, "Is anybody
aware of any research/papers that might address conversion rates between
economic indicators and harvested wood volume? I'm working
with IMPLAN databases and I would very much like to relate the industry
output of sawmills or logging camps to the amount of wood processed or
harvested. Other economic metrics that I have are employment numbers and
value-added which might also serve as base units for conversion to wood
volume. Thanks for any input or leads." You may contact Christine

CANADA - USA FOREST LAND TREND INFORMATION SOUGHT - Hi -
I am seeking information on area of forest land in Canada and USA from
1970 to present. I have the FAO State of the Forest Report for 1999 and
the Forest Resources Report for 2000 for TBFRA but these only have trend
data for the last 5 years or so. I am also seeking estimates of areas
of Old Growth forest (however defined) for the same time period.
Lastly what is the estimate of "original" old growth for each country.
I have a reference that the USA has less than 5 % left (http://www.yorku.ca/faculty/academic/cblanche/nats2200/n22oldgrowth.html)
but the reference does not say 5% of what figure or what is the source
of the estimate. I assume the major cause for the loss of "original"
old growth in the USA and I presume Canada is the conversion to farmlands,
urban areas and supporting infrastructures. Please contact me if
you can help with the statistics or pass my request on to someone who can.
Thanks, Gyde (gklund@att.net).

REMOTE SENSING TENURE-TRACK FACULTY - The College of Arts
and Sciences at Indiana University in Bloomington seeks to fill a new tenure-track
Assistant Professor position in the area of satellite remote sensing applied
to the understanding of land-use and land-cover change. We expect applicants
to have a strong technical background in refined vegetation discrimination,
in addition to an interest in social science applications to the human
dimensions of global and local environmental change. Experience with
platforms such as SPOT, Landsat TM, MSS, or other vegetative-based sensors
is a must, but experience with the new generation of sensors (e.g., MODIS,
AVIRIS, IKONOS) and capacity to integrate with earlier platforms is a plus.
Applicants should have state-of-the-art training in the latest approaches
to processing remote sensing products such as spectral mixture analysis,
multiscale and multitemporal analysis of remotely sensed data, topographic
normalization in high relief areas, and both discrete and non-discrete
classifiers (only a partial list is included here). Primary interest and
competence should be in applications to the understanding of vegetation,
land-use and land-cover change, and linking these to social processes (e.g.,
integrative modeling). An orientation toward multidisciplinary, team-based
field work and the integration of remote sensing with GIS are also desirable.
Applicants should indicate whether they prefer their home to be in the
department of Geography, Anthropology, or Political Science. The teaching
load in these departments is two courses per semester. Please consult CIPEC's
web page at www.cipec.org for details. Ph.D. in hand, fieldwork experience,
evidence of external grant support, and published articles in peer-reviewed
journals are required at time of application. Salary Range $45,000 - $60,000.
Application Deadline 15 November 2000. To ensure consideration, interested
candidates should send a letter of application reviewing research and teaching
interests and fit with the work of the Center and the department; curriculum
vita; and copies of manuscripts, publications, and grant proposals.
Please provide only a list of referees at time of application. Address
application to Prof. Emilio Moran, Co-Director, Remote Sensing Search Committee,
Center for the Study of Institutions, Population, and Environmental Change,
Indiana University, 408 North Indiana Avenue, Bloomington, Indiana 47408
USA. Inquire via e-mail to Joanna Broderick, Search Coordinator, at jtbroder@indiana.edu.

ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR - SILVICULTURE - The
University of Northern British Columbia welcomes applications for a tenure-track
faculty position in Silviculture to be filled at the Assistant or Associate
Professor level. The successful candidate will be assigned to the
Forestry Program, a dynamic and supportive team of scholars committed to
the intelligent and responsible management of forest resources. Teaching
duties will include introductory Silviculture, with additional duties in
Forest Ecology or Natural Resources Management. The successful candidate

reports, have an active research program, and participate in the supervision
and evaluation of graduate student research. Two research forests and the
new I.K. Barber Enhanced Forestry Lab are available for research use.
The candidates will have a PhD (or close to completion) and a research
specialization in silviculture. A demonstrated commitment to teaching
and research excellence is required. Professional experience in northern
forests and familiarity with a variety of forest ecosystems and silvicultural
systems is an asset, and may compensate for a lesser degree of direct academic
experience. Please forward your curriculum vitae and the names and addresses
