HAVE YOU HEARD? NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
LAND COVER CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM (LCCS) - After several years in the
making, FAO's Land Cover Classification System is finally available.
LCCS is a comprehensive standardized a-priori classification system,
designed to meet specific user requirements, and created for mapping
exercises, independent of the scale or means used to map. The
classification uses a new concept based on a set of well-defined
independent diagnostic criteria that allows correlation with existing
classifications and legends and can be the base for several specific
disciplines. Thus, this system could serve as a world wide land cover
reference basis. Because of the complexity of the classification and the
need for standardization, a software program has been developed to
assist in the interpretation process. This software program facilitates
not only the standardization of the interpretation process but also
contributes to its homogeneity. For more information see:
http://www.africover.org/LCCS.htm

HELP!
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE
* PARTHENIUM BIOLOGICAL CONTROL - Dr. Endale Berhe is searching for
information on a potential biological control agent for Parthenium
phyllody that occurs in Ethiopia. If you have any information on
the subject, please contact Endale at P.O. BOX 168, Kombolcha
plant health clinic, Kombolcha, South Wollo, Ethiopia. Fax: + 251-

* MILLENNIUM ECOSYSTEM ASSESSMENT (MA) - This is a call for proposals
(CFP) for local, national, or regional assessments to be considered
for inclusion as components of the Millennium Ecosystem
Assessment. A working group will review these proposals in
November and December to select the ten sub-global assessments
that will be included in the MA. The technical design for these
sub-global assessments will then be developed during the first year
of the MA process (which will begin in early 2001) by a working
group involving representatives of each assessment area. Thus,
while the proposals being solicited in the CFP should clearly
demonstrate why the particular local, national, or regional
assessment being proposed would meet the needs of the MA, the
proposal need not include a detailed technical design for the
assessment process. For more details please see the following web
sites: Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (
http://www.ma-secretariat.org ). For a more detailed description
of the Sub-Global Assessment component, as well as the proposal
requirements, interested parties should consult the document
"Regional, National and Local Ecosystem Assessments: Goals,
Features & Selection Process, and Aspects of the Sub-global
Components of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment"
(http://www.ma-secretariat.org/design/subglobal.pdf/). There is
also a call for Nominations of Scientific Experts To Contribute to
the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment - The Millennium Ecosystem
Assessment Board is seeking nominations of natural and social
scientists with expertise on (i) the condition of ecosystems, (ii)
the impact of ecosystem change on health, economics and human
welfare, and (iii) policies for managing ecosystems, to be involved
in an international scientific assessment of ecosystems.
Nominations should be submitted by 31 December 2000. In either
case, contact: Valerie Thompson, Interim MA Secretariat, C/O World
Resources Institute, 10 G Street, NE, Suite 800, Washington, DC
20002 USA. Tel: +1-202-729-7600. Email: valeriet@wri.org
* MEDICINAL PLANTS CONTACTS SOUGHT - Dr Rajesh Uppal wishes to get in
contact with other foresters who are working on Medicinal and

Zeera( Bunea persicum). Dr Uppal also seeks information about he
land races of this potential plant of western Himalayas. You may
contact Rajesh at natp06@hpkv.hp.nic.in.
