FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE NO. 27
18 SEPTEMBER 2000
Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email
newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring
of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services
(http://home.att.net/~gklund/
) and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in
the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm.
Currently FIU is sent to about 4000 email addresses world-wide. Many of
these recipients forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe or
sponsor, contact me at gklund@worldnet.att.net. Thanks Gyde
FIU SPONSORS - This issue of FIU is sponsored in part through
the generous support of:

Miller, Mike Phelps, Dave Reed. Thank you all for sharing your information!
HAVE YOU HEARD? NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
HOME AGAIN - I am back home again after nearly a
month in beautiful Finland. I spent a little over 2 weeks working
for the Helsinki Consulting Group (www.hcg.helsinki.fi) as part of a team
of specialists evaluating Finland’s Metsähallitus (Forest and Park
Service – http://www.metsa.fi ) Landscape
Ecology Planning system. That is why you will see several references to
Landscape assessments in this issue of FIU. The latter part of my stay
in Suomi was spent with my wonderful wife on vacation visiting St. Petersburg,
Tallin, and Stockholm. Even though in my heart I consider Finland
a second home, it is good to back in the USA again. I hope to get
FIU back on its weekly schedule. In addition, I found that my email
inbox reached capacity around 4 September. If any of you sent emails to
me after that date, you probably got a reject. My apologies. Please send
again. Thanks, Gyde
BAMBOO LIST - You are invited to subscribe to the
bamboo-plantations email group. Subscription is FREE. To subscribe
to the group please send a blank email message to: bamboo-plantations-subscribe@egroups.com
ENTOMOLOGICAL BIBLIOGRAPHY - The Entomological Bibliography
of New Guinea including the Solomon Islands (10,500 citations) has been
updated and moved to a new searchable interface at: http://entomology.si.edu:591/entomology/NewGuineaBib/search.html.
The bibliography is a "work in progress" still under editing and development.
This version combines the original bibliography of some 7100 citations
through 1967, published by Gressitt and Szent-Ivany in 1968 by Bishop
Museum as Pacific Insects Monograph 18, and a supplement, compiled by Scott
Miller and colleagues, including some 3400 citations since 1967.
NEW EFI DIRECTOR - The Board of European Forest Institute
has appointed Dr. Risto Päivinen (Finland) the new Director of the
European Forest Institute (EFI). He will begin his term on 1 October
2000. Dr. Päivinen has been the Deputy Director of the Institute since
its establishment in 1993. The Institute is based in Joensuu, Finland.
See more at: http://www.efi.fi/news/news/2000/paivinen_appointed_director.html.

and the management of natural hazards. In this context we are seeking
two outstanding Postdoctoral talents (part-time 75%) in the areas of Dendroecology
coupled with landscape dynamics to participate in the research activity
"landscape history and -dynamics". This is to ensure that ecological risk

A well-known densitometry/wood anatomy group technically assists the team.
The successful applicants have the chance to establish novel activities
in the field of coupling tree-ring information with land-use dynamics and
to further existing international collaboration with similar research institutions.
Applicants must have Ph.D. degree in environmental sciences or a related
field such as geography or environmental history with demonstrated expertise
in spatial analysis, GIS and/or simulation techniques. Advanced skills
in computational or applied statistics are welcome. The candidates must
have internationally reviewed original research papers in one or more fields
mentioned above. We offer a two-year contract starting at March 1,
2001, with opportunities for renewal. Qualified applicants should forward
(1) a curriculum vita, preferably with photograph, (2) an outline of envisaged
