FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE NO. 23
17 JULY 2000
Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email
newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring
of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services
(http://home.att.net/~gklund/
) and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in
the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm.
Currently FIU is sent to about 4000 email addresses world-wide. Many of
these recipients forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe or
sponsor, contact me at gklund@worldnet.att.net. Thanks Gyde

HAVE YOU HEARD?
EARTH OBSERVING SATELLITES INTERNET - NASA is developing
a space-based "Sensor Web." The Sensor web is a concept of integrating
a constellation of Earth observing satellites into a cohesive network of
measurement instruments. Users will have access to any on-orbit sensors
and be able to direct and control those sensors in the same manner as we
access information on the Internet today. For more information see
http://earth.nasa.gov/nra.
PROFOR - Programme on Forests at the United Nations Development
Programme (PROFOR). PROFOR was established by UNDP in 1997 in response
to the proposals for action of the Commission on Sustainable Development’s,
Intergovernmental Panel on Forests (IPF) to promote sustainable forest
management (SFM) and related public and private sector partnerships and
thus enhance forests’ contribution to the livelihoods of the poor.
PROFOR’s collaborative work, particularly with Interagency Task Force on
Forests (ITFF) members, responds to IPF proposals, specifically number
17, which encourages countries to develop and implement national forest
programmes (nfps) and to use nfps as a basis to improve cooperation in
the forest sector. PROFOR operates simultaneously in two spheres:
at the country level to assist the development of national strategies for
SFM through its contribution to nfp processes - with a particular focus
on the development of integrated forest financing strategies; and at the
international level to advance the development of policy and financing
instruments as elements of national and international strategies to support
SFM. PROFOR also contributes to establishing the foundations for forest
partnership arrangements as a vehicle to coordinate sectoral support. To
find out more about PROFOR login at www.undp.org/seed/forest
FORESTRY AND FOSSIL FUELS. Thomas J. Stubbing writes,
"As oil becomes increasingly costly and, in due course, scarce (see http://www.hubbertpeak.com/campbell/commons.htm),
you will, I hope, be interested in what was done to overcome scarcity during
WW II, see http://www.gengas.nu/byggbes/contents.shtml,
in particular the Executive Summary."
WORKSHOP ON LAND USE, LAND-USE CHANGE AND FORESTRY- From
the Climate News list - The International Institute for Sustainable Development
(IISD) has published the results from the workshop on land use, land-use
change and forestry (LULUCF), 10-15 July in Poznañ, Poland. The

SOIL CONDITIONING TRIAL OFFER - Willem Van Cotthem writes,
"We offer to all interested readers the possibility to set up a small trial
on a soil conditioning method that we developed at the Botany Department
of the Ghent University Belgium). This "TerraCottem-method" was developed
to improve tree survival in arid, semi-arid or subhumid regions.
It consists of mixing a very small quantity of the TerraCottem-compound
in the plantpit. TerraCottem consists of more than 20 different substances,
belonging to 5 different groups (hydroabsorbant polymers, mineral fertilizers
with macro- and micronutirents, organic substances, precursors of growth
stimulators and lava). It stocks a large quantity of water and nutrients
around the roots of the young trees, it enhances microbiological activities
and stimulates root growth. Hence, survival rates are significantly
higher and overall tree growth is much better. Interested FIU-readers can
send me an e-mail to ask for a sample of TerraCottem. In the meanwhile
they can have a look at our websites." Prof. Dr. Willem VAN COTTHEM, President
TC-DIALOGUE Foundation, Beeweg 36, B-9080 ZAFFELARE, Belgium. Office Phone

issue in the region.
HELP!
TECHNICAL
-
DISEASED TECTONA LEAVES - Pankaj Oudhia writes, "During my
visits to tribal region of Chattisgarh (India) I have observed that one
folkdoctor was using the diseased Tectona leaves for the treatment of Epilepsy.
In forest I have seen that these trees were infested by Powdery mildew.
I am eager to know whether such uses have been reported earlier or
not?" If you have any information contact Pankaj at pankaj.oudhia@usa.net.

-
ARCVIEW QUESTION -Yi-ching Lin writes, "I have a question
about ArcView. Currently, I am involved in a project in overlaying
tree maps (we have tree maps in a study site in 1939, 1951, 1988, and 2000).
I am planning to overlay the maps in ArcView. I was wondering if
I can use non-earth projection in ArcView (i.e. use our local coordinate
system, rather than the global system - such as latitude or UTM). I will
appreciate your suggestions!" Please contact Yiching at y-lin13@students.uiuc.edu
-
EXCEL CRUISE COMPLICATION APPLICATION NEEDED - Frank Eichel
writes, "Before I embark on developing a cruise compilation application
in Access or Excel, I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has
already done so.I am sure that some like-minded forester doing plantation
inventories overseas has already devised a basic application. I have
already scoured the internet and came up with quite a few (expensive) software
packages, almost all in imperial units." If you can help, please contact
Frank at 15647-97 Avenue, Surrey, B.C. V4N 2T4, Canada. Phone: +1-604-
581-3335. Email: tmbrjnkr@netcom.ca.
-
ROOT DENSITIES - Javier Guerra is seeking 1) Information
about root biomass and root densities of broadleave species and 2)
Biomass studies (detructive sampling), Biomass models.. If you have information
to share, please contact Javier at jgcfor@smtp.uach.cl.
