FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE NO. 22
10 JULY 2000
Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email
newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring
of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services
(http://home.att.net/~gklund/
) and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in
the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm.
Currently FIU is sent to about 4000 email addresses world-wide. Many of

HAVE YOU HEARD?
TBFRA 2000 RELEASED - The new UN-ECE/FAO publication "Forest
Resources of Europe, CIS, North America, Australia, Japan and New Zealand"
(known as the Temperate and Boreal Forest Resource Assessment or TBFRA-2000)has
just been released. It's the most comprehensive set of internationally
comparable data on the temperate and boreal forests ever issued. This
data set is the region's contribution to the Global Forest Resource Assessment
2000, led by FAO, which will be issued later this year. Unlike earlier
assessments, which concentrated on forest area and wood supply, TBFRA expands
to provide information on practically all aspects of the forest. The
six main chapters are: 1. Area: status and changes, 2. Ownership and management
status, 3. Wood supply and carbon sequestration, 4. Biological diversity
and environmental protection, 5. Forest condition and damage, and 6. Socio-economic
functions. The publication contains about 100 main tables, with statistics
and comments by 55 countries (over 700 parameters were requested for each
country). A special chapter assesses the reliability and comparability
of the data, which were supplied by national correspondents who adjusted
the raw national data to the internationally agreed definitions. For further
information please contact: Mr. Alexander V. Korotkov, TBFRA-2000 Co-ordinator,
Timber Section, Trade Division, United Nations Economic Commission for
Europe (UN/ECE), Palais des Nations, Room 458, CH - 1211 Geneva 10, Switzerland.

HELP!
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE
-
CARBON STORAGE FOREST INVENTORY - Dr. Thomas Lynch is looking
for information on forest inventory for carbon storage. If you have
any information to share, contact Tom at tlynch@okstate.edu.
-
EFFECTS OF BEAVER DAMS - Dave Lindenas writes, "I am undertaking
a study on the impact that flooding, resulting from Beaver Dams, has on
long term timber productivity in the Boreal Forest - Specifically Canada's
Boreal forest. In addition to the obvious impact, it has been reported
that once the flooding recedes, the predominant resulting vegetation is
extensive grass and/or shrub, there by significantly reducing the ability
for tree species to re-populate the site. Does anyone know of studies that
relates beaver flooding to impact on timber supplies and if so, where the
resulting papers might be found?" Please contact Dave at dave.lindenas@weyerhaeuser.com.
-
STICKY SAPOTACEAE - Peter Lovett writes, "I am planning to
collect samples from the African dryland Sapotaceae species - Vitellaria
paradoxa - in order to age trees and observe climatic effects on growth.
The main problem is that the latex in the outer bark of live trees can
clog up the borer. I have heard that removing a portion of bark can help
in the procedure and was wondering if anyone had any other experience with
this family. I was also wondering if there is anyone out there who would
might be willing to run a 'free' carbon dating test before I attempt to
obtain funds for further dating studies. Suggestions for other sources
of funding for continued research on this fascinating tree species would
also be welcomed." If you can assist, please contact Peter at The Shea
Project, COVOL Uganda, PO Box 833, Lira, Uganda. Email: lovett@africaonline.co.ug.

PLANTATION MAPS WANTED - Russ Monson writes, "I am trying
to obtain global and/or regional maps of forest plantation coverage. Ultimately,
I am interested in putting together a global map, so if one does not already
exist, I would be interested in regional maps from all parts of the globe.
In essence, I am trying to develop a way to merge geographic information
on forest plantations with a 3-d global tropospheric chemistry model to
determine interactions between increased plantation establishment and effects
on the oxidative power of the troposphere. Can anyone help point me to some
resources in this regard?" Russ Monson, Professor, EPO Biology, Campus
Box 334, Ramaley N122, Department of EPO Biology, University of Colorado,
Boulder, CO 80309-0334 USA. Tel: +1-303-492-6319; Fax: +1-303-492-8699.

SEEKING EMPLOYMENT IN PACIFIC NORTHWEST. From SAF-Member
list - Amy Howells writes, "I'm a student member of SAF and a recent graduate
of the University of Washington (Seattle) forestry program. I'm very
excited about pursuing a career and learning many different areas of natural
resources. I am writing to the list to get suggestions from natural resource
professionals on how to pursue a job in the industry. The truth is
I'm having a difficult time getting my foot in the door. I know that
there are many career centers with advice on the internet, but I wanted
to approach the people who would know this area best. It seems like perhaps
the jobs are decreasing in the Pacific Northwest area, but this is the
place I love, especially the beauty of the Olympic Peninsula. If
anyone has any suggestions, please let me know." If you can assist, please
contact Amy at amy@human-appliance.com.
-

forestry, but I do not have experience working in Canada's bush. For this
reason, I can not find any company where I can be accepted as a temporary
