FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE NO. 21
3 JULY 2000
Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email
newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring
of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services
(http://home.att.net/~gklund/
) and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in
the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm.
Currently FIU is sent to about 4000 email addresses world-wide. Many of
these recipients forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe or
sponsor, contact me at gklund@.att.net. Thanks Gyde
FIU SPONSOR - This issue of FIU is sponsored in part through
the generous support of:
-
ESRI, the world's leading supplier of geographic information
system (GIS) technology to natural resource professionals. For more
information visit the ESRI site at http://www.esri.com/forestry

IIASA/FAO CD-ROMS ON LAND AND LAND USE. The CD-ROMS are "Soil
and Physiographic Database for North and Central Eurasia", which updates
the FAO Soil Map of the World, and "AEZWIN: An Interactive Multiple-Criteria
Analysis Tool for Land Resources Appraisal", which provides a Windows application
of the FAO Agro-Ecological Zones methodology. More information and ordering

VIRTUAL PLANTS ON INTERNET - From the Interamerican Resources
Management Newsletter 26 June, 2000 - With a few clicks of a mouse, botanical
researchers and hobbyists can now identify that plant they've been wondering
about. The New York Botanical Garden has become the first major herbarium
to digitize and upload images of 2,500 representatives of its plants. The
Garden hopes the high-resolution photos will facilitate the identification
and classification of plants without having to send actual plants through
the mail - the method until now. The specimen catalog is at: http://www.nybg.org/bsci/hcol/vasc.

MIGHTY MITES - Pankaj Oudhia writes, "As the Monsoon rains
starts in our region the Red velvet mite Trombidium emerge out from the
soil. During my visit to tribal region of Chattisgarh (India),I have seen
that the tribals are collecting this mite in large numbers. I was surprised
to know that they are collecting it for earning money. The current rate
of Trombidium in our region is equivalent to 20 US Dollars/Kilograms. On
detailed inquiry tribals said that this is a good sex tonic and its oil
is very useful in treating more than 50 common diseases. Due to its
overexploitation its population is continuously decreasing. It is a farmer's
friendly mite. If anybody working on different aspects of this mite, I
want to share my research knowledge with him/her." Contact Pankaj at pankaj.oudhia@usa.net.

FREE OPPORTUNITY FOR NETHERLANDS or BELGIUM GIS COMPANY - Mr.
Skiba Andrei (Russia ) is looking for a GIS enterprise in the Netherlands
or Belgium where he can gain some hands-on experience fields - geodesy,
land tenure, urban planning. TACIS will pay all his expenses so it would
be no cost to the enterprise except for time. In return, the enterprise
gets to may use of Mr. Andrei's time and skills. The three months of on-the-job
training are sought between 30.07.2000 on 28.10.2000.

AUTHORS WANTED - We need authors to write three short articles
for the Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems on the following topics: Forest
land resources; Classification and distribution of forests by geography;
and Tropical hardwoods, bamboo, rattan. In addition to world-wide recognition
for publishing in an international encyclopedia, authors are entitled to
receive modest payment for their work. All work is to be completed by 31
December 2000. If you are qualified and interested, please contact John
Owens at jowens@uvic.ca or Gyde Lund at gklund@att.net.

VIRTUAL REALITY TREES - David Wynne Rees is working on some
virtual reality stuff and needs to produce an algorithm with which to construct
a real looking tree in 3-d -- a biological tree as opposed to any
other type. He is looking for any sources which he can use to see the dimensions
of a set of tree types - e.g. tabulation of tree dimensions, branching
incidence, trunk diameter vs height, branching of twigs etc. Obviously
David can see that trees in general have root systems, trunks, branches,
twigs and texture. He suspects that each of these domains display fractal
properties and it is these properties which will allow the rendering to
be realistic. If he is right in this then it will be apparent in real tree
measurements and this would help configure the algorithm. David means to
set up the parameter set so that he can tailor it subsequently to derive
different species, condition and so on. If you do not know of any such
tabulations then are there any classic texts of drawings of trees / photographs
which you would recommend? If he manages to produce a nice tree application
then you may want a copy as it will be possible to display across the internet
and this may be nice for a forestry web site. You would need a thing called
a VRML plug in to render in 3-d but these are not uncommon. If you can
help, please contact David via Gavin Jordan at GJordan@newtonrigg.ac.uk.
-
SOCIAL FORESTRY SURVEY - Kim Phat Nophea writes, "I would
like to conduct social forestry survey in Cambodia. Does anybody have sample
questions for such survey?" If you can help, please contact Nophea at fplan01@gipmc.shinshu-u.ac.jp
-
PEST INFORMATION SYSTEMS - Patricio González Díaz
asks about references in pest and disease information systems (forest health)
in the world. - how foresters in other place organize information about
that (protocols in prevention, prognosis, detection, suppresion, etc).
Particularly, systems built with support of remote sensing and GPS/GIS
tools. If you have any information to share, contact Patricio González

MY LAST REQUEST - While still being of a reasonably sound
mind (no comment on my body), I am closing out my search for national and
published definitions of forest, forestland and tree after a two-year effort.
You may view the 450+ definitions that I have assembled at http://home.att.net/~gklund/DEFpaper.html.
I am still lacking national or legal definitions for the following nations:
Algeria, Angola, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Belarus, Belize, Bosnia and
Herzegovina, British Virgin Islands, Brunei Darussalam, Bulgaria, Cayman
Islands, Chad, Congo (Zaire), Djibouti, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt,
El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, French Guyana, French Polynesia, Greenland

have no national definitions of forest or forestland: Antigua & Barbuda,
Barbados, Brazil, Colombia, Isle of Man, Lebanon, Monaco, and Seychelles.
If you can supply any of the missing definitions or the email address of
whom I should contact, please contact me immediately. I am trying to complete
this task in time for the IUFRO World Forestry Congress next month. Thank
you all for your kind support in this task over the years. Gyde (gklund@att.net).
