FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE
5 JUNE 2000
Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly
email newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring
of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information
Services (http://home.att.net/~gklund/)
and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in
the natural resources field. Back issues of FIU may be found at
http://www.foresters.org/fiu/index.htm.
Currently FIU is sent to about 4000 email addresses world-wide.
Many of these recipients forward FIU to their own mailing lists.
To subscribe or sponsor, contact me at gklund@worldnet.att.net. Thanks
Gyde

FREE IMAGE PROCESSING SOFTWARE - The SILVICS (Satellite
Image Land Vegetation Integrated Classification System) software
provides state-of-the-art, robust image processing tools for the preprocessing,
spatial analysis, and classification of medium resolution, optical
satellite imagery. SILVICS is a FREE Win95/NT software for satellite-based
forest mapping, developed by Niall McCormick, Joint Research Centre (JRC),
Ispra, Italy. SILVICS was developed as part of the activities
on forest ecosystems mapping at the EGEO (Environment and Geo-Information)
Unit of the JRC's Space Applications Institute. Although SILVICS was developed
primarily for mapping forests, it is also valid for satellite-based mapping
of any land cover types. For more information or to download, go to: and

STUDY TOUR TO CANADA - The annual Joint UN-ECE Timber
Committee and FAO European Forestry Commission Study Tour will be to eastern
and western Canada from 9-16 September 2000. The theme of the study tour
will be on certification of sustainable forest management and certified
forest products in Canada. The tour will include 2 in-tour briefing/discussions
on certification, plus numerous opportunities to see forest management
and forest products production. The dates were selected to coordinate with
the end of the International Forest Communicators Forum 2000 and the meeting
of the FAO/ECE Team of Public Relations Specialists in the Forest and Forest
Industries Sector meeting on 8 September. You are welcome to participate
in all three events! Full information on the tour, including registration
materials, may be found on the homepage of the Timber Committee website

INTERNATIONAL FOREST COMMUNICATORS FORUM 2000 -The Forum's
goal is to improve the ability of forest communicators to convey to the
public a positive image of the forest and the forest industries sector.
The objectives are: 1. Identify elements of common communications activities,
for example through identification of common interests and messages, at
the national and international level; 2. Understand characteristics
of successful public relations campaigns; 3. Share experiences on the use
of various communications tools and approaches; 4. Capture synergies among
communicators; 5. Provide participants with a network of contact persons;
6. Explore means for sharing communication tools; 7. Improve understanding
of the complex issues related to all aspects of the forest sector (environmental,
social, economic); 8. Building PR capacity in central and eastern European
countries. At the following address you will now find general information,
a provisional programme and an announcement (in English and French) of
the International Forest Communicators Forum 2000 which will take place
on 5-8 September 2000 in St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada. The Forum
is open to forest and forest industries sector communicators. Forum website

WOOD PROPERTIES DATABASE - From the Forest List.
On 10 May 2000 the "Database Wood Properties" was published for free online
access in the Internet. The database was developed at Dresden University
of Technology, Chair of Wood- and Fibrous Materials Technology (HFT). There
is still a german version only. English version will come soon. The database
contains values of the most interesting technical and anatomical wood properties
of more than 500 wood species now. You can check the database by following
these links: http://www.tu-dresden.de/mw/ihp/hft/hft.html
-> Datenbank Holzeigenschaften and http://www.tu-dresden.de/mw/ihp/ig_holz/ig_holz.html

FIGHT A BUG WITH A BUG - Pankaj Oudhia writes, "Namaskar
to everybody. Is anybody working on Medicinal uses of forest insects especially
Hoploceambyx spinicornis and Alaus sordidus? I am Agronomist and conducting
research on weeds. I have much interest on medicinal insects and mites.
I have surveyed the whole India, and collected the information on medicinal
uses of more than 500 common insects and mites. Many of these insects are
still in use in many part of country. I am using many of them to treat
my health problems. I have published many papers on medicinal insects and
mites. Please visit at www.celestine-india.com/pankajoudhia." If you have
any information to share, please contact Pankaj at pankaj.oudhia@usa.net.
-
SNOW JOB - Andrzej Dunajski writes. "I am working on
monitoring system for nature protection on ski runs with artificial snow
cover in Karkonosze Mts. (Sudetes). Please give me any information
about some well documented investigation of skiing influence on the soils,
vegetation and fauna (with special focus on artificial snow cover)." If
you can help, please send your information to Andrzej Dunajski, Institute

VOLUNTEER MODERATOR FOR FOREST LIST SOUGHT - Jarmo Saarikko
writes, "I've been trying to find a new person for moderating the Forest
List. ("Forest" is the research discussion list that Jarmo has so
successfully run for the last 12 or so years.) The maintenance of subscriptions
has become extremely easy now that there is a web-based form with which
subscribers may be removed or their settings changed. The moderator should
be impartial and not very active in participation so that s/he could act
as a referee which is sometimes needed when discussions heat up. The person
should have a permanent position and probably work in a research institution
or university to provide long term support for the list and have general
knowledge in the topics being discussed." If you would like to help or
have questions, please contact Jarmo Saarikko, Information Manager, Finnish
Forest Research Institute Metla, Information Systems Services, Unioninkatu
40 A, FIN-00170 HELSINKI, Finland. E-mail: Jarmo.Saarikko@metla.fi Tel:

RAPID RURAL APPRAISALS - Shivanand Balram writes, "I
am interested in finding out more about the state of use of qualitative
research techniques in forestry studies. My specific interest is in the
use of rapid rural appraisals, structured questionnaire surveys and the
Delphi Technique. I would greatly appreciate more information from members
about their experiences and/or research in this area, any relevant academic
contacts, publications, websites, or resources of a general nature in qualitative
research." Contact Shivanand at shiv.balram@physics.org.
