ARCHIVE OF TROPICAL FOREST INFORMATION ATROFI - UK - Jenny Wong writes, "As you may remember from a while ago, I have been involved with a project to collate information on tropical forest data extant in the UK. I am pleased to say we have been making some progress on this and have a web page up to explain what we are trying to achieve. At present the web page is a bit basic but we hope to have a searchable meta-database and supporting questionnaires on the site shortly. The URL for the site is: http://www.atrofi-uk.com. The meta-database will contain location, protocols, contacts and access information for tropical TSP, PSP and volume functions held in the UK."

FORUM DEVOTED TO INVENTORY - Barry Elliott writes, "I don't know
if you're aware of this, but the January/February issue of the "Forum",
a publication of the Association of BC Professional Foresters (ABCPF) is
dedicated completely to Forest Resource Inventory. It's Volume 7,
Issue 1." See: http://www.rpf-bc.org/publications.html

TREE SPATIAL ANALYSIS - Martin Béland writes, "I am currently working on a paper on competition between jack pine and trembling aspen and jack pine and white birch clay soils of northwestern Quebec, Canada. I wish to use tree mapping data to estimate, for each tree species in a stand, the intensity of competition coming from each species. I want to do this for the whole stand and for a few target trees. My question is: Do some of you know of a method of analysis of spatial pattern and computer program that can account for mixed stands. I am not very familiar with this type of analyses. I have found one program on the internet, called ADS in ADE4, but couldn’t figure out yet if tree species can be differentiated. I would be glad to post a summary of the reponses I will get." If you can help, please contact Martin directly at Unité de recherche et de développement forestiers de l'Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue, 445, boulevard Université, Rouyn-Noranda (Québec) J9X 5E4 Canada. AUTHORS WANTED - UNESCO is going to publish an “Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems” (EOLSS). Dr. John Owens is the editor of the section dealing with Forest and Forest Plants. He is in need of qualified authors for the following topics:
WHAT'S AGROFORESTRY? Agroforestry is often defined as the growing
of trees and crops in the same place at the same time. My question is -
do the experts consider the growing of oil palms, pecans, maple sugar,
naval stores, olives, oranges, etc. as agroforestry activities? Trees
and crops are grown at the same location and time. If you have a
published answer to this question, please contact me at gklund@worldnet.att.net.
Thanks, Gyde
