Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email newsletter sent
to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring of natural resources.
FIU is produced by Forest Information Services (http://home.att.net/~gklund/)
and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in
the natural resources field. Currently FIU is sent to about 3500
email addresses world-wide. Many of these recipients forward FIU to their
own mailing lists. To subscribe or sponsor, contact me at gklund@worldnet.att.net.

CONFERENCE CANCELLED: "Forest Inventory as a Business Management Tool"
The SAF A-1 (Inventory) Working Group regrets to announce that the conference,
scheduled for July 23 -26 in Minneapolis, has been cancelled. Initial response
to the topic was strong, but the call for papers did not generate sufficient
response to make a successful meeting at this time -David C. Hamlin
RESEARCH PROPOSAL FOR SPOT MECHANICAL SOIL / SITE PREPARATION - Tim Van Horlick is looking for Forest Economists needing a project for a thesis. Tim wishes to evaluate site preparation devises such as the VH Mulcher (http://www.vhmulcher.com ) to determine if they improve seedling survival and growth, reduced environmental impact / risk as compared to numerous present common methods and provide a means of cultivation for steeper slopes and sensitive sites. A huge diverse number of sites have been treated with little formal research. Much of the secondary benefits of this treatment are hypothetical and very difficult to assign a monetary value to when achieved. Tim will make his existing data available to anyone upon request. For more information, please contact Tim at tim@vhmulcher.com
SLOPE STABLIZATION URLS SOUGHT - Thanasis Karathanasis writes, "I am working on a small project on slope stabilisation through planting and I do not seem to have enough info in my database. Are there any of you people involved in similar projects that could help me by mailing me a few wed addresses either of universities/ institutes or private companies where I could get more info on materials and principles on such projects?" If you can help, please contact Thanasis directly at Municipality of Georgioupolis, Planning and Environment,124, P. Kountourioti Rd Rethymno, Crete, GR-741 00 Hellas/Greece Tel: 0030 825 61793-4 Fax: 0030 831 26353. Email: blacky@otenet.gr
LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT QUESTION - Tom Haswell writes, " Does anyone know of a forest landscape management effort for combined economic and ecological objectives involving multiple ownerships (private and public mix)? Any leads appreciated. I know of some US federal and some US state landscapes with such goals, but no mixed ownerships." If you can assist, please contact Tom directly at: wthaswell@proaxis.com
POST-DOC POSITION SOUGHT - George Goroyias writes, "I am looking for a post doc in wood science. My PhD is related with wood based Panels preservation technologies including some work on heat treatment stabilization." If you know of any opportunities, please contact George directly at University of Wales Bangor, School of Agriculture and Forest Science, Gwynedd LL57 2UW, UK. Email: afp071@bangor.ac.uk
