Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email newsletter sent to
people interested in the inventorying and monitoring of natural resources.
FIU is produced by Forest Information Services (http://home.att.net/~gklund/)
and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in the
natural resources field. Currently FIU is sent to about 3500 email
addresses world-wide. Many of these recipients forward FIU to their own
mailing lists. To subscribe or sponsor, contact me at
gklund@worldnet.att.net. Thanks Gyde
FUTURE FIUs - Starting with the next issue of FIU, I will be
sending out on Mondays rather than Fridays. It seems some people
turn off their computers over the weekend and as a result, do not get some
of the issues. Also we will continue with the new format - at least for a
while. Most people liked it - but there were a few problems. One person
received it in Sans Serif font, which I don't have on my computer (I
compile FIU and send out in Times New Roman). Another person could only
view FIU in the "reply to" mode. I have this problem with some
incoming email also. The text is spread out in one continuous line.
A third person from the USFS also had problems reading but I think this is
due to some was due to formatting problems. If these problems persist or
others arise, we will switch back to the old format.
FIU SPONSOR - This issue of FIU is sponsored in part through the
generous support of:
The Forestry Corp., specialists in forest inventory,
management planning, growth and yield, and wood supply. Professional
resource management staff combined with a full complement of database and
GIS analysts provide services in resource analysis and modelling,
information management and GIS application development supporting forest
operations and management. For more information please visit The
Forestry Corp. site at http://www.forcorp.com
or contact Brian Maier at brian_maier@forcorp.com.
This week's input comes from Azlan Adnan, Adolf Ceska, Roderick C
Dewar, Andrew Leslie, Brian Maier, Doug Norton, Graham Savage, Shyam
Sundar Shrestha, Jeff Stone, and Marcella Szymanski. Thank you all for
sharing your information!

CONCERNED ABOUT DEAD WOOD? (My wife says I have plenty and accumulating more daily! - Gyde) - A discussion list on "Dead Wood Ecology and Management" has been established to meet a communication need identified at the "Dead Wood Ecology and Management in Western Forests" symposium held in Reno Nevada in November 1999. The discussion list is open to all that wish an outlet for discussing dead wood ecology and management issues. The host site - http://www.egroups.com/group/dead_wood contains a list of links to dead wood resources and a calendar of dead wood events. The discussion list currently has about 60 members. As with most new discussion lists traffic currently is light and the list of links is currently small. To join the discussion list you can do one of the following: (1) Directly go to the Dead Wood Ecology and Management Discussion list at http://www.egroups.com/list/dead_wood/info.html and select the JOIN button; (2) Directly go to the Dead Wood Ecology and Management Discussion list at http://www.egroups.com/group/dead_wood / and under Members select New Users: Register Here; (3) Send an email to dead_wood-subscribe@eGroups.com ; or (4) If you have problems with the above please send an email message to the list moderator at ( dead_wood-owner@egroups.com or jeff.stone@gems7.gov.bc.ca ) indicating your desire to join the discussion list.
EFISCEN is a large-scale forest scenario model in use at the
European Forest Institute (EFI), to produce projections of the European
forest resources into the future under different scenarios. In the EEFR
database the European forests are divided in 2689 forest types,
distinguished by country, region, owner, structure, site class and tree
species. For each forest type, the area, mean volume and current increment
by age class are used as input for the model. The aim of the EEFR database
is to make these data available to a wider user community. For most of the
European countries the data are freely accessible, for a small number of
countries access is restricted to EFI and its members. Together with the
requested data, the user will receive contact information of the original
data provider, links to the responsible national forest institutes home
pages, information on the source of the data and definitions used for the
forest inventories. The database can be found at
http://www.efi.fi/information_services
/, then follow the link to the EFISCEN European Forest Resource Database.
WATERSHED TRAINING/INTERNET - GRAPHICS SOUGHT - Internet-based training from the Watershed Academy: EPA's Watershed Academy website has been developing web-based training modules on the many-faceted field of watershed management. 20 self-paced modules, many with self-tests, are operational and cover introductory-level technical topics such as watershed modeling, human and natural agents of change, ecosystem benefits and services, urban watershed management, watershed ecology, protecting instream flow, and using the National Hydrography Dataset. A module on forest management practices is under development with USFS -- please contact norton.douglas@epa.gov if you have any training graphics on this subject you'd be willing to share. The website address is: http://www.epa.gov/owow/watershed/wacademy/acad2000.html
MULTIPLE USE ALLOCATION AND MAPPING - Ersin Yilmaz writes I have been working as a research forester at the Eastern Mediterranean Forestry Research Institute in Tarsus-Turkey (Türkiye). And also I am doctorate student on forest resources economics at Faculty of Forestry in Istanbul-Turkey (Türkiye). My main interest is on the planning of multiple use forestry. I have research project on models for determining the optimum land and resource allocation solution. The aim of my study is to determine how much parts of a forest should be managed for what purposes. These purposes will include water, wildlife, grazing, timber, hunting, recreation, non-wood forest products etc. That is to say I want to carry out a mosaic of zones to be allocated multiple uses (timber, water, wildlife, herb etc.) on forest land, and to find the best combinations of management activity alternatives. Finally it will be allocated forest land resources to multiple uses optimally and provided the multiple use of forest resources, and identified the amount of optimum allocation for various uses in forest land. Also I want to prepare the functional map which will show location of functions on forest. Some mathematical programming gives only total area of forest functions on forest. But they don't show where forest functions should be in forest. Can anybody help me about mathematical programming technique that determine WHICH PARTS of a forest should be managed for what purposes (functions) according to physical, biological, economic, social, politic, environmental and ecological factors? Finally how can I prepare the functional map which will show location and acreage of functions on forest? [I have no GIS tools, but I can have geographical (=spatial) data for my research forest]. I don't know whether or not the decision of where to allocate is to be subjective decision. Thank you in advance for your kind assistance. Please contact Ersin Yilmaz directly at Inonu mah. 1403 sk. 17/5 33130 Mersin-TURKEY. Email: yilmazersin@hotmail.com
OTHER LISTS? - Do you know of any lists that would keep people informed on publications and events in the Management of Visual Resources in Forestry, including Landscape-level Forest Management, Landscape Architecture, Public Perceptions of Forest Management Activities, etc. If you happen to know of such a list, please contact Paul Picard at picard@interchg.ubc.ca.
COLOR ME GREEN - Azlan Adnan writes, "I am looking for Colouring Books for elementary schoolchildren (ages 5 to 12) with theme of forests, rainforests, animals, nature, etc. If you know of or have URLs or .pdf files of such, kindly e-mail to me." Azlan's email is azlan@azlan.org
