FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE - 21 JANUARY 2000

Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring of natural resources.  FIU is produced by Forest Information Services (http://home.att.net/~gklund/) and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in the natural resources field.  Currently FIU is sent to about 3500 email addresses world-wide. Many of these recipients forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe or sponsor, contact me at gklund@worldnet.att.net. Thanks Gyde

At the recommendation of one of our faithful readers, I am trying a new format to make FIU easier to read. In doing so it may make it more difficult at your end. If you have troubles, please let me know and I will revert back to the old format.

This week's input comes from Pekka Alhojärvi, Shivanand Balram, Mary Bates, Ed Pepke, John Nickerson, and Paul Romeijn . Thank you all for sharing your information!

HAVE YOU HEARD? (GENERAL)

EUROPE STORM DAMAGE - Ed Pepke writes, "The UN-ECE Timber Committee has established a clearinghouse for information on the December 1999 wind storm damage in European forests at: http://www.unece.org/trade/timber/. There you will find: 1. official government statistics on the windthrow (versus 1998 removal volumes); 2. Four ECE press releases on the site itself, safety (including the FAO/ECE/ILO Manual on Acute Forest Damage), damage statistics, and possible effects; and 3. links to national and regional websites with storm-related information. We would like to provide a service for the exchange of information.  In the summer we will analyse the effects, if any, on forest products markets.  We welcome your contributions of website links to additional information. Non-electronic information may be faxed to us."  For more information contact Ed Pepke, Forestry Officer--Marketing, Timber Section, Trade Division, UN-ECE and FAO, Palais des Nations, CH-1211 Geneva 10, Switzerland. website: http://www.unece.org/trade/timber , Tel: +41 22 917 2872; Fax: +41 22 917 0041. HELP!

SDSS - Shivanand Balram writes "I am looking to get in contact with persons on the list who are working in the area of forestry spatial decision support systems (SDSS). I am interested in designing an SDSS for forestry management using the GIS software ArcView but I am not sure if this has been done before. My main interest is in the applications of SDSS to evaluate optimal land use strategies within a forest reserve. The aim is to establish a spatial decision model that incorporates a variety of objectives (such as agriculture, tourism, sustainable logging, etc) to be used for optimal land-use configurations within the forest reserve (under defined constraints). Does anyone know of good SDSS forestry sites, books, software or any other forestry SDSS information ?"  Please contact Shivanand directly at McGill University, Department of Geography,  Burnside Hall, 805 Sherbrooke Street West, Montreal QC, H3A 2K6, CANADA Email: shiv.balram@physics.org   or  sbalra@po-box.mcgill.ca
