FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE 14 JANUARY 2000

Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in the natural resources field. Currently FIU is sent to about 3500 email addresses world-wide. Many of these recipients forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe or sponsor, contact me at gklund@worldnet.att.net. Thanks Gyde

THIS SPACE FOR RENT! - Would you like to help sponsor FIU and gain some publicity at the same time? Contact me for details. Thanks, Gyde.

Input for this week's issue of FIU comes from Gary Allen, Manuel Baud-Bovy, Bill Ciesla, Manuel Estrada, Steve Fairweather, Bill Feidt, Oscar Garcia, David Hamlin, Andy Henriksen, Hervé Jactel, Holly Nelson, Oliver Philips, David Reed, and Mike Smith. Thanks for sharing folks!

GENERAL

FRAGMENTATION ALGORITHM - The January 2000 issue of the Journal of Forestry carried an interesting note on an algorithm for fixing fragmented habitat in the Focus section (pages 2-3). For a copy of the algorithm, contact Steve Wilent at swilent@compuserve.com

HELP

BAMBOO-CARBON SEQUESTRATION - Manuel Estrada writes, " Does anyone know where I could find information on the capacity of bamboo to sequester carbon?" If you can assist, please contact Manuel directly at manuele@PRODIGY.NET.MX.

TREE HT/DBH RELATIONS - Gary Allen writes, "Recently, we had a survey crew survey a site with numerous tree locations, diameter measurements, and general identification. The survey was performed in Kitsap County, 60 mi (100km) NW of Tacoma, WA, USA at an elevation of 1500ft (457m) above MSL (mean sea level). Specific tree information includes hemlocks and grand firs that range in diameter from 6" (0.2m) to 24"(0.7m) approximately. Without sending them back to site, is there a chart/reference table that can give me an approximate height knowing the tree's diameter and type? I have done some sampling on my own, although I would like to confirm/qualify my information with other (larger sampling) research. If there are any specific tables or technical articles regarding this, I certainly would appreciate any assistance." If you can help, please contact Gary at gcallen@ATT.NET

FOREST ENTOMOLOGY / ECOLOGY RESEARCHER - The Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique, Forest Research Centre, Bordeaux-Pierroton (France) announces a new permanent position as effective mid-2000 : "Organisation and function of the forest insect biodiversity". Annual salary is about 25 000 Euros (= USD). Recipient of the position will implement field studies designed to test whether mixed hardwood plantations can improve pest control by natural enemies in Maritime pine forest monoculture (largest area of conifer forest plantation in Europe). The researcher will analyse the effect of composition and structure on the biodiversity of insect predators and parasitoïds at both stand and landscape level. The job will consist in field trapping and insect inventories, description of forest structure and composition at stand and landscape levels, spatial and multivariate statistical analyses. The candidate must possess a PhD degree in entomology, ecology or closely related discipline and be less than 31 year-old + 1 year/dependent child + 1 year/year of military service. Scientific background in spatial and multivariate statistics is essential. Postdoctoral experience and training in forestry are desirable. Ability to direct and participate in active field research effort, autonomy, good competence in scientific publications are expected. Fluent French and English required. Application files are now available and must be completed and returned before February 3rd 2000. The competitive examination may occur in May-June 2000 and the position will be filled in August-September 2000. Official information may be found at: http://www.inra.fr. Applicants are advised to contact: Hervé JACTEL at Laboratoire d'Entomologie Forestière, INRA, BP 45, F- 336111 CESTAS-GAZINET, France. Tel: +33-5-57.97.90.27. Fax: +33.5.56.68.05.46. jactel@pierroton.inra.fr .

SAMPLING SERPENTINE STANDS - Steve Fairweather writes, "I seem to recall an article addressing inventory techniques for long, narrow ("serpentine") stands, but I don't know where it is. Can anybody help me out?" If you know of any good references or contacts, please contact Steve directly at sfairweather@orminc.com

JOB VACANCIES AT UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS - Check http://www.leeds.ac.uk/jobadverts for information on both a Professorship and Lectureship in Physical Geography with closing dates in late January/ early February. Ecological Processes, Biogeography, and Global Environmental Change are key strategic areas that the School of Geography wants to invest in. For further information contact Dr. Oliver Philips at oliverp@geog.leeds.ac.uk

SPREADSHEETS WANTED - Andy Henriksen writes, "I'm looking for an excel based spreadsheet, that I can simply enter in data from forest point samples and come up with diameter distributions, density/stocking info, graphs, etc. I could spend a bit of time devising one myself, but figured if someone was willing to share, it would save me a bit of time." If you can assist, please contact Andy directly at ahenriksen@mi.usda.gov

- A special thanks to Isabella Nobili for making some of the FIU web pages more user friendly!

My thanks also to Daniel-Yves Alexandre, Nelida Puentes Alvarez, Krishna H Gautam, and Estanislao Villagomez for supplying tree, forest and forest land definitions for Burkina Faso, Cuba, Nepal, and Northern Mariana Islands respectively. See http://home.att.net/~gklund/DEFpaper.html. (Note, I still need definitions for many other countries - see last week's FIU or contact me.) Thanks, Gyde

As always, please share as appropriate. If you have any new resource inventory/monitoring-related publications, meetings, or news that you would like listed in FIU, please contact me … and don't forget I always welcome sponsors. This newsletter is dependent upon your continued input and support. Have a great weekend! Gyde
