Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services
(http://home.att.net/~gklund/) and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in the natural resources field. Currently FIU is sent to about 3500 email addresses world-wide. Many of
these recipients forward FIU to their own mailing lists
FIU SPONSOR - This issue of FIU is sponsored in part through the generous support of:
Juniper Systems, manufacturer of rugged field computers and GPS for forest management and forest product applications. Their Allegro Field PC has both Windows CE and DOS operating systems for application flexibility and is rugged and waterproof for use in outdoor environments. It is ideal for forest inventory applications. For more information, visit Juniper Systems at http://www.junipersys.com or contact them via email at js@junipersys.com
HELP YOURSELF (your company, organization)! - Publicize your company, agency or organization to the world and at the same time help support FIU. Place a small ad in the next issue of FIU. The fees are small and they go to covering the expenses of putting FIU together. If interested, please contact me at gklund@worldnet.att.net . Thanks, Gyde
HAPPY NEW YEAR- AGAIN!!! Well, the Y2K bug appeared to be non-fatal. This week's input comes from Sergio Cinnirella, Barry Elliott, Tom Hammett, David Hix, Eric Jones, Timo Karjalainen, Jackie Litizzette, Vikas Nath, Isabella Nobili, Sangeeta Pandey and Denice Shaw. Thank you all for sharing your information!
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT NETWORKING PROGRAMME (India) - a project of the United Nations Development Programme and the Ministry of Environment and Forests (India), has upgraded its portal site on Sustainable Development at http://sdnp.delhi.nic.in (mirror site is http://members.tripod.com/sdnp_india ) The portal site provides over 15,000 links to databases, libraries, organisations, job opportunities and news clippings on over 25 development issues ranging from agriculture to biodiversity to health and human rights.
GLOBAL OBSERVATION OF FOREST COVER - Global Observation of Forest Cover is a relatively new initiative of the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) to improve the quality and availability of satellite observations of forests and the information derived from these data. For more information, see http://www.ccrs.nrcan.gc.ca/gofc .
EMPACT - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Monitoring for Public Access and Community Tracking (EMPACT) program has announced the FY00 competition for grants to local metropolitan governments. Approximately $3.5 million will be made available for this competition with a maximum award of $400K. Proposals are due April 10, 2000. Information and applications are available on the EMPACT home page, http://www.epa.gov/empact . The goal of the EMPACT program is to support communities to provide pubic access to clearly-communicated real-time environmental monitoring information. The grant competition is open to local governments (as defined by 40CFR Part 31.3) located in one the 86 EMPACT metropolitan areas in the U.S. Tribal governments located within an EMPACT metropolitan area are also eligible to apply. Although awards are made to local governments, EMPACT strongly encourages applicants to establish partnerships with industry, academia and other organizations.
IMAGEJ - Emilio Garcia writes, "Could somebody help me with the IMAGEJ program?, that is the same program like NIH IMAGE that is for Mac; IMAGEJ work with IBM. I need to know the steps and how to measure the leaf area. I know only a bit about that, I have the program, I know that it is a very good tool to take measurement of the leaf area, please I need this information, because I think a made wrong measurements because this program works in pixels (?) and take the area of the shadow (?). Thanks for your help." If you can help, please contact Emilio directly at: Runoff Agriculture Department, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Sede Boker Campus 84990, Israel. Email: egarcia@bgumail.bgu.ac.il
CARBON OFFSET TRADE ASSISTANCE - Isabella Nobili writes, "I am currently working on a degree thesis on the technical and economical implications of forest certification schemes, with particular attention to the Kyoto protocol and the carbon offsets trade. One of my main interests is in evaluating the credibility of the carbon offsets trade related to the huge business which is going to invade the market, a risks evaluation on both the emissions and forestry sectors and a projection on the long term of such a market. This study will represent just a part of my thesis, and the weight of it on the final work depends also on the co-operations I will be able to set up on the next weeks." If you have any information to share or recommended contacts, please contact Isabella directly at inobili@penta.agrip.unipd.it .

22 May - 9 June 2000. Issues in World Forestry and Forest Products: Tropical Study Program in Central America. Held in Nicaragua and Panama. Knowledge of global forest resources and products, and issues related to their use and management, is a major requirement for those working in the increasingly global economy. This program is designed to expose participants to a broad array of interdependent influences on the management of the world's forests, and the extraction and use of forest products. This course will also enhance understanding of the role forest-based enterprises play in world society, and on the environment and economy. Applications will be considered on a first come, first served basis. Participants who successfully complete this course will be eligible to receive college level credit from Virginia Tech. Cost: The course fee is $1,700, plus the cost of airfare (the advanced student price through January 25th is $1,500). This fee covers all course-related expenses in Nicaragua and Panama including lodging, board, and field trips. To reserve your place, submit a registration form and a $150 deposit to the address below. Full payment for the course is due April 1, 2000. If you wish to receive Virginia Tech credit, there is a special reduced tuition rate. For further information and application details, please contact: Dr. A. L. Hammett, Coordinator of International Programs, College of Natural Resources, 210 Cheatham Hall (mail code 0323), Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia 24061 USA or contact by phone: +1-540-231-2716; FAX: +1-540-231-8176; or E-mail: himal@vt.edu For registration form and more information visit the course web site: http://www.cyber.vt.edu/wd3784nic
