| Forestry Education in Denmark |

| In Denmark there are 3 levels of careers in the forestry. First level is the forest supervisor, he is educated at the University in Copenhagen. This is a theoretical education which takes 6-7 years to gain. This career level is the highest in the hierarchy and is just below the landowner. The next level is the forest ranger (which I am). This is a mixed education with both theory but also rather a lot of practice. The education takes 5 years and ís comparable with an engineer career. The school for rangers is just outside Hillerød in North Seeland. The education is in a number of stages where you first are practising in a forest district. Afterwards you go to school for a year then out in practice again and so on. This gives you an understanding of both sides of forestry. Both the practical job how to plant with a spade in rainy and windy weather, but you also learn about economics, law and leadership. The education is broad which prepares you for many jobs. Unfortunately the school doesn´t have an english site. But the danish version can be visited on Web Site and then click on the word "Skovskolen". Information can also be obtained from the school by e-mail. The last level is the woodman. This is training for forest workers and is comparable to plumber, electrician and so on. This education is in the same school as the ranger in Hillerød. The education takes 3 years. Most of the time is spent on practise in a forest district. Now and then you go to school for about 7 weeks to learn basic things on how to handle different jobs. Regards Lasse Rasmussen e-mail |
